Canada / Re: Robert Stewart and Isabel McGlashan in Lochaber N.S.

Looking over all of the available material concerning Allan Stewart and Susan Stewart, we are fairly convinced that Susan Stewart was the eldest daughter of Robert Stewart and Isabel McGlashan as it would fit with what we know of the rest of that family.

Allan Stewart has been researched by the descendants but we have some reservations.  As there are so few Allan Stewarts (in the whole of Scotland) born around 1813, it is quite likely that Susan's husband was the son of Donald Stewart and Elizabeth Cumming as recorded by the descendants. The family were living in Rannoch at Innerhaddon, so the two families came from the same area and there was a baptist mission in that area.

However, as Familysearch/Trees/Pedigrees warns, her parents could not have been Allan Cumming and Christian McFarlane - she would have been too young.

We would suggest that she was the daughter of Alexander Cumming and Mary Menzies in Torrachruie, born/baptised Fortingall 12th October 1783, the eldest of eight children.

Allan had an older brother, Duncan, b 16th February 1811 and about whom we know nothing.  Did he emigrate with Allan?

You need to provide as much information as possible if you are wanting people to help -

Where was Donald Stewart born?
Where did he die?
Is there a headstone or an obituary?
Where and when did he get married?
Are you giving 'MacHardy' as a middle name or as a maiden name?
Are there registered birth / deaths of children?

SP is ScotlandsPeople - the government department web-site.  You buy Credits - it's not too expensive.  If you know the locality of the death, approximate age or name of mother you can narrow it down.

STEWART MARGARET  73y ROBERTSON F  1883  424 / 73  DUNFERMLINE
(So her mother's maiden name was Robertson)

The Caputh one we have on file....
She was the widow of Alexander Stewart, farmer, and died at West Lodge, Caputh
She was the daughter of John Robertson and Janet Robertson (same maiden name) and the informant on the death certificate was Jessie Stewart, her daughter

Perthshire / Cumming Families in the Parishes of Fortingall and Blair Atholl
« on: Friday 16 February 24 21:06 GMT (UK)  »
One cluster of families by the name of Cumming / Cumin lived around the Kinloch Rannoch area, where parts of four parishes met - Fortingall, Logierait, Blair Atholl and Dull.

Although the OPR of Fortingall does not commence until the 1740s, and some pages are damaged, the Blair Atholl and Logierait OPRs mention Cumming families much earlier

The Cumming marriages and earlier births have now been indexed, and the genealogies have been mapped out based on the available evidence.

Unlike the Stewarts and Robertsons in the area, the Cumming families did not adhere to the traditional naming pattern for their children (eldest son after the paternal grandfather, eldest daughter after the maternal grandmother etc.)

Some branches were skilled millers and spread out to work the various corn mills.

We hope that our research will be of use to Cumming descendants.  If there are obvious errors or you have additional information, then please contact us.  The link to the Cumming Index is:

John Dewar's first child, Margaret was baptised 22nd February 1793 but she must have been born in 1792 as a second daughter was baptised 28th May 1793. The last child, Janet, was baptised in 1801 with all of the children being born at Tempar.

John was not the only Dewar living at Tempar. Robert Dewar was married to Margaret McDonald, and Duncan Dewar was married to Ann McDonald.

There were no Dewar families living at Tempar by the early 1830s

We can find half a dozen children baptised in Glamis, Monifieth and Mains up until 1833.

There does not seem to be marriage banns in any of the OPRs.  Do you have a date?

Had Thomas Hill and his family left Scotland before the 1841 census?

As for the parentage of Helen Cumming, we have narrowed it down to 2 possibilities - assuming that she has a baptism in the OPRs.

Many thanks, Throth

rdarby

What happened to your Dewar family after they left Tempar?  We wondered if they had emigrated like the Stewarts in Tempar.

There were quite a lot of Dewar families living at Tempar  in the 1750s, 1760s and later

Our main interest is the Cumming line but you never know when you might pick up cousins etc at a later date.

There were a reasonable number of Baptists in Blair Atholl parish in the early 1800s. The Baptist minister lived in Balintoul, close to the new (Parliamentary) road, south of the castle.  The house is still there as a private dwelling, down a side lane which passes the old bakery.

John Stewart and his wife Helen who are buried in the Borenich Burial Ground were Baptists, which probably accounts for there being scant OPR entries for their family.  Luckily their son wrote letters containing information about his family and siblings. He lived in Broughty Ferry, just east of Dundee and was the lay minister for the Baptist church on the other side of the river Tay at Tayport.

All of this information is on the Borenich web-site,

Throth
