Australia / Re: Info please about Gallipoli veteran William Rupert Goddard of Merriwa, NSW
« on: Wednesday 06 December 23 14:40 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks mcGroger, I had missed his family's 1891 census record, now added. I have also now looked at the Wm Goddard aboard Orsove 1912. I see that although it says he was intending to go to NZ he was contracted to land at Sydney. I am thus now far more confident this is 'my' guy. Thanks again for your assistance.

Very clever trick to work out the marriage date. Thanks

As for whether the William Goddard you found aboard the Orsova in 1912, his age fits. However, his trade when he enlisted was 'Printer' which is not really 'Sign Writer' and you say he stated he was bound for New Zealand. I conclude this probably isn't the right guy, though it is not impossible. His dad was a House Decorator. Frustratingly he is missing from the 1911 UK Census.

Are any post-WW1 censuses available in Australia where we could find him so we could learn his later occupation?

Australia / Info please about Gallipoli veteran William Rupert Goddard of Merriwa, NSW
« on: Tuesday 05 December 23 14:03 GMT (UK)  »
William Rupert Goddard was born 1885 in Hastings, England. In about 1911/12 he emigrated, alone, to Australia, ending up I believe in Sydney. Q1: Can someone with better skills then mine at Australian immigration records find details of his ship and dates?

On 17 Aug 1914 he enlists in AIF at Randwick, Sydney and he lands at Gallipoli on the very first morning, 25th April 1915. The next day he is wounded - bullet in chest. On 15 Aug 1915 after nearly 4 months treatment in Egypt, he sails from Suez back to Australia.  (I have his Service Record detaling this)

I'm not sure what happens to him next except:
a) 5 May 1916 he is discharged from the Army, presumably after further treatment etc,.
b) Sometime in 1916 he marries in Randwick, Sydney. Q2 Can anyone find precise date?

His bride is Elsie Nodder, who, like William, was living in Walthamstow, London before the war so I suspect they were boy/girlfriend there. I know Elsie left England, alone, on 27 Jan 1916 aboard ship 'Orontes'.

After marrying they moved around a bit, but ended up settling in Merriwa NSW. I believe they had two children. William died there 1973, while Elsie died in Muswellbrook 1985, aged 99. .

So, to repeat: Q1 - when did William migrate from London to Australia? and Q2 - When did he marry Elsie?

Of course other info about them is welcome. Just for context, I am related to the Nodder family and researching them, so my interest in this family stems from Elsie's side.

Thanks

The Common Room / Re: Probate for Joseph Nodder who died 1904 while on a trip to Canada
« on: Saturday 04 February 23 08:29 GMT (UK)  »
Dear all,
This is absolutely brilliant. You Rootschatters come up trumps again. I would never have found this. I am always astonished how helpful and knowledgeable this community is.

I have not looked closely yet, but it apears Joseph had property in Ontario. This is rather different from what his Obituary states - that he was in canada on a trip for his health.
So left his money to Martha his sister, and Sarah Ann Whittington who is enumerated as his Housekeeper in 1891 and 1901. Whether Sarah Ann was actually more than just his housekeeper we shall never know...

I have not yet looked at Martha's Will.  She is next to be written up.

Thanks again everyone.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I didn't have the press cutting asking for anyone with claims on the estate to pipe up. Interesting. Thanks.

AMONDG suggests probate would have been in Canada if Joseph was living there. However, per his obituary he died while merely on a trip there to visit his father and for his health. His residence was Fulwood Rd Sheffield, as per the press cutting Comberton posted.

I'm going to look at the non-indexed probate records in Family Search Catalog suggested by MCKHA489. I am familiar with this rabbit hole and have spent many fruitless hours hunting through the millions of scans there, unearthing the occasional diamond.

I know quite a bit about the lives of Joseph's parents, Joseph Elias and his wife. They were Plymouth Brethren and lived in Oshawa for 30+ years. Joseph Elias died after his son (in 1914). Quite possibly his strict inward-looking religion would preclude him inheriting from non-Brethren. (I'm guessing).

Also, sister Martha was involved with the BHC (https://canadianbritishhomechildren., .com) and accompanied several children to Canada, including Martha and Jessie Gott. Martha died 1917 in Canada.

I also know about Joseph's wife, Emily. They were living separately by 1891 Census. After Joseph died in 1904 she ended up in Eccleshall Bierlow Workhouse. In 1911 Census she is in Chesterfield workhouse. In 1913 there are press cuttings related to a court case after she tried to drown herself. Here is one quote

"Mrs Nodder, whose appearance and speech suggest that she has seen better days, was again brought before the Chesterfield Borough Bench to-day.
Chief Constable Kilpatrick said the woman, who formerly lived in Sheffield, had been in Chesterfield for five or six years, and during the early part of that period she had received an allowance from her husband, who had emigrated from Sheffield to America. Latterly, however, she had been thrown on her own resources and had earned a precarious livelihood by hawking. She had occasionally, when existence had become more than usually difficult, gone into the Workhouse, and the climax arrived on Friday, when she tried to drown herself in the River Hipper near to Clayton Street, Chesterfield. Her remark to him afterwards was that she "had not the courage to do it."

Emily died 1915 in Chesterfield Workhouse. Clearly, therefore, she did not inherit Joseph's estate, even if she had good legal claim.

I shall keep hunting... Thanks again

The Common Room / Probate for Joseph Nodder who died 1904 while on a trip to Canada
« on: Thursday 02 February 23 20:32 GMT (UK)  »
This Joseph Nodder was a manager of Boiler/Flue division of the John Brown and Co. Atlas Ironworks in Sheffield in 1880s/1890s. i.e. senior and presumably fairly well-off. He died 23 Aug 1904 while on a trip to Canada (Oshawa, Ontario). He had no children and was estranged from his wife (Emily nee Williams). I can find an obituary in Sheffield local papers.

I feel sure that he would have had property/money which would have to be dealt with after his death but I cannot find any entry in the UK Probate Register for 1904/1905. Does the fact that the death occurred in Canada, not in UK, mean that probate etc was carried out in Canada (surely not!) or is there a 'special' separate location/index I don't know about for probates for overseas deaths?  ... or is it possible there is just no Probate at all. If so, where would the money go? Does the government snaffle it?

Devon / Re: Details of Joseph Nodder marryiage to Emily Williams Q3 1870 Plymouth
« on: Sunday 22 January 23 12:01 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks all for this. I shall see if I can buy the marriage certificate and go from there. I should have thought of that at the start.

Can someone advise where/how to order marriage certificates. I know the GRO website where you can search for and order birth and death records, but not marriage records.

Devon / Details of Joseph Nodder marryiage to Emily Williams Q3 1870 Plymouth
« on: Monday 16 January 23 20:42 GMT (UK)  »
I know from FreeBMD that Joseph Nodder (b 1851) married Emily Williams (b cir 1849) sometime in Q3 1870 in Plymouth Reg'n District. I'd love to know more about the marriage - church, date, fathers names etc. I know a lot about Joseph, but would like to find out more about Emily. At present I only know she was born ~1849, Blackheath, London. I have hunted for details in Family Search Catalog, Ancestry, etc, with no joy. Hence this request.
  • Joseph's father was named Joseph Elias Nodder, a shoemaker from Blackheath, who emigrated to Canada with wife Elizabeth in 1873).
  • In 1871 Census Joseph and Emily were found in Frances Street, St Andrews, Plymouth with Carr family.
  • In 1881 they have emigrated to Canada, (Whitby, Ontario, today a suburb of Toronto)
  • Joseph's family has a history of Wesleyan Methodism.
  • In 1881 Canada Census (also 1891) Joseph and Emily give their religion as 'Brethren'

I find the Plymouth Brethren 'sect' very interesting (e.g. I read they could only marry on Tuesdays!) and membership would clearly have a big impact on the couple's lives.

Many thanks Jomot. I realise that took effort to transcribe.
