Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Re: Alison Macarthur Australia

Thank you all for your work on this photo.

RJ137, thank you for the colourisation. I realise from the look on her face that she was cheeky, a fact I can guarantee, she was not a redhead, as appears in your colouring.

Again, many thanks for your work.

Can the brilliant restorers clean up this photo of my late wife. She was about 18 months old in 1943, with her grandfather.

I scanned it at 600dpi to help the restorers. I hope that is good enough.

Missed that post.

Another Troll?

The web is full of misguided idiots who for some reason like to wind others up.

I hope the individuals concerned have all their fingers and toes, then with a prevailing wind and plenty of effort then can at least count up to twenty.

I too missed that post, so have no idea what was said.

Regarding the fingers and toes of those who do such mischief, I would be looking for the devices to "tie" them together.

Just keep up the good work Sarah and Trystan

The Lighter Side / Re: Remember When............

That brings to mind a day a mate and I cycled from Faversham to Sittingbourne.

At one point there was a long decent and assent, a good "big dipper"

As we were going down, on the way home,we were pulled over by a policeman, for doing more than the posted speed limit :o :o :o

I cannot remember what the speed limit was, but we both were very chuffed at
a) being able to do that speed, and
b) being pulled over :P ;D

The Lighter Side / Re: Paper trails and decades of research, what is the point?

It is possible to be descended from someone yet share no DNA with them.  The further back the greater the chance that has happened.  It is due to the randomness of inheritance.  Although we get 50% of our DNA from each parent it is random so not necessarily exactly 25% from each grandparent.  If this is multiplied back through multiple generations it leads to the chance of no shared DNA.

For 3x grt grandparents the chance of not inheriting any DNA from them is only 0.01% but by the time you get to 6xgrt grandparent, there is a 17.76% chance, by 10x grt grandparent the chance is 57.53%.  This also means for many ancestors you may inherit less than you'd have thought from a specific ancestor.

That comment brought to mind some work I did as a "young" person studying agriculture in the late 1950's. We were doing some genetics, and followed the Mendel research ideas. Gregor Mendel being a monk who worked in the monastery garden.

The basic Mendelian theory was that if one has a black parent, and a white parent, of what did not matter, the resultant offspring was: one black, one white and two khaki. Thus there would be a complete mix up of the genetics.

Technical Help / Re: Can anyone tell me if I am being scammed?
« on: Friday 26 August 22 05:52 BST (UK)  »
Here on Oz, we regularly get phone calls from the taxation office, supposedly, about a refund.

A friend recently got one, and annoyed the hell out of the scammer by bursting out laughing. He knew that he was going to have to pay extra tax when they went through the system, and was not going to get a refund ;D ;D :-X :-X

The Lighter Side / Re: Oldest Groom ever?

Imagine being born to a 90 year old father for instance, and he had his first child at 20, that means there are 2 half siblings both born 70 years apart, and the same generation level as one another despite the humongous age gap.

First child would probably be a grandparent themselves by that time(at least) :o :o :o
