Dazey
John Pickett born in Brackley Northamptonshire is my g g grandfather.
I too have been looking at records in Brackley and only found the Prickett entries.
Seeing as John's eldest son was named Thomas and eldest daughter Mary, thought his parents were most likely Thomas Prickett and Mary Jarvis. Not sure how I can prove it though.

John Pickett enrolled in the Kings Own Light Dragoons c 1823 and became a coastguard and later a Customs Officer. He married Jane Brown in Scotland in 1832 and had 10 children all up. His eldest son was Thomas ( my great grandfather). Thomas's sister Mary Ann Young, brothers John Offington and Alfred died as  children in 1840. Four other children died...as did their mother,  from Cholera in 1849. Thomas another Alfred and Mary Jane were the only children to survive.  After the death of his wife Jane and 4 children, John moved to London with Thomas, Alfred and daughter Mary Jane. John Pickett did marry again in London in 1850 and Mary Jane died about a month later.
Both Thomas and Alfred came out to Australia, Thomas in 1859 and Alfred about 1862.
Hope this helps.
Regards Del

I've been lucky enough to trace my 3xg-grandfather, JOHN PICKETT, throughout his life...all except his birth.

On every single record he has given his place of birth as BRACKLEY 1806.  His father was THOMAS PICKETT - a farmer.  I can't find any trace of his birth/christening.

Am wondering if his surname was originally PRICKETT as that seems more common in Northants at that time.  Can anyone help please?

Many thanks, Dazey
