Great, I shall contact the whakatane museum.  Thanks.
Hone Makarauri (half-caste, as stated in article) - this is Taipari John Makarauri, who would have been 24 yrs old at the time.

Hi there,  Thanks so much for your help.  All I know is that John McLeod was married to Wikitoria (Victoria).  His son Taipari John Makarauri (McLeod) was born in 1841 in Tauranga and died Feb 1 1916.  Taipari married Ngataare Wirikake (1) and Ngataierua Te Kiritoto (2).

Info about William Brown found on internet.  All info though is after he arrived in NZ.  Would like to find out about his life before he settled in NZ.

Thanks for your reply.
I found this on another post by Trudym who is searching for information on John Swan:
Hi, all we know is he joined the brig Elizabeth on 22 February 1830.  There was a William Brown who was also on the ship who also ended up in Poverty Bay Gisborne, John didnt stay here but went to Hawkes Bay.  William Brown was born 1802 so maybe John Swan was born about that same period, have no idea of when.  However, he named his two sons, William and Tom so maybe that is a family connection.

Hope this helps.

Hi, Wish I could help you with info on John Swan.  I am interested in the info about William Brown.  I think he is my GGGG Grandfather.  He settled in Gisborne and was born in 1802.  I am searching for more info on him.  Did you manage to find any other info about the ship Brig Elizabeth??  Where did the ship sail from?? Was there a connection between John and William as John named his son William??  Any help would be gratefully received.
