The Common Room / Re: How do I go about it?
« on: Monday 02 May 22 16:06 BST (UK)  »
It sounds like you are trying to research too many people on different lines and becoming overwhelmed.

The name of the game is to prove each person you research and yes the further you go back the less records are available, so it is important to know what records are available in the country/place and time frame they lived. I have also found it is worthwhile researching sideways ( siblings) as they go back to the same parents ( as your ancestor) and many times I have found records for siblings easier to find.
Take one person at a time and find ALL records THEY generated during their lifetime so you can cross reference their records and know that person should be in your tree before going onto the next generation back..... as you only need to make one mistake and you will find yourself with ancestors that don't belong to you.

There are some photos of head stones at Knockbreda you could look through online http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/down/photos/tombstones/belfast/index.html

Belfast City Council do not hold records for Knockbreda, I will PM you the phone number to call for Knockbreda records

The Common Room / Re: Is this very unethical or a common sense opportunity?

Totally unethical in my opinion......... I would be more than livid if ANYONE tried that one on me especially if I had already said no/didn't approve

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Benjamin Thorpe - Aussie convict from Halifax area
« on: Sunday 10 April 22 14:37 BST (UK)  »
On Findagrave it seems there is another

Name   Benjamin Thorpe
Death or Burial Place   Shelf, Metropolitan Borough of Calderdale, West Yorkshire, England
Cemetery   Bethel Methodist Chapelyard
Death Date   29 Mar 1844
Birth Date   1810

and yet another in the 1851 census, married to 'a' Mary( also born Shelf) with 8 children
1851: Benjamin Thorp Head Male 40 Shelf, Yorkshire b shelf living in Cleveland

one who married a Mary Mortimer in 1827 in Halifax

and another who married a Ellen Lockwood in 1837 in Thornhill, Yorkshire

So it looks like the name is a very popular name

England / Re: Could a birth have not been registered?
« on: Sunday 03 April 22 10:33 BST (UK)  »
If the child was a stillbirth it wouldn't be registered on the BMD index.
If the child was born elsewhere it will be registered where they were born, eg another county/country as many single women were sent away from home to unmarried mothers homes to give birth
Potentially she was registered/given another name other than she was known by/used.
Spelling of her name or an error in transcribing in the index could be different.

Have you looked for a baptism record?

Sligo / Re: Was full age always full age
« on: Monday 21 March 22 15:04 GMT (UK)  »
Age was 'given' information so they didn't have to prove with a certificate their age when marrying although unlikely a girl of 11/12 could pass themselves off as 10 years older  especially if the marriage was locally to where they lived, so it is more likely you are looking at another person of same/simular names baptism/birth record, possibly a cousin or aunt the same family grouping.

I would check all census prior and after marriage, then try to follow the 11/12 yr old, but also go back a generation to see if an aunt or cousin was named the same name given that you see a family name connection.

Lanarkshire / Re: Paterson family
« on: Tuesday 18 January 22 14:34 GMT (UK)  »
I have no idea if 'this' John Paterrson is the same John Paterson you are looking for or not, however some of the things you have written 'fit'

Yesterday I was relooking at my great aunt who was 'married' to a John Paterson he was born Blantyre Glasgow Lanarkshire in 1886 I know he was married previously but don't know who to ( as was my great aunt previously married in Glasgow) so my great aunt/he 'married' sometime after 1933  I know they moved  to my great aunts home county of Lincolnshire in the mid 1950s, John died there in 1959 and is buried in the 'family' village in Nottinghamshire. He/my great aunt had no children and I could never find any children born in either of their previous marriages, although my great aunt had two (adult) step daughters from her first marriage who were very close in age to my great aunt, whereas their dad was in his 60s
