Now isn't that just like my luck      :)

Thank you Sandra, now that you've drawn my attention to it, I do seem to recall reading something about that fire once before.    Thanks too for the link, will have a read and this time hopefully 'digest'.

Best wishes,

             Gordon.

US Lookup Requests / 1890 census

Hello all,

I'm wondering if someone with access to the 1890 US census might kindly oblige me by looking up the 1890 census for a THOMAS ARMSTRONG in Hudson, South Dakota.      Just to complicate things, I believe there are 2 Hudsons in SD.

Thomas was born in England near Carlisle in Cumberland in 1867 and moved to Middlesbrough.   He was in the 1881 M'bro census, but then vanished.    Only recently I stumbled across a newspaper cutting of his death notice in M'bro in 1899 which stated that he had lived in Hudson, but he obviously returned home.

Fingers crossed,

           Gordon.

US Lookup Requests / South Dakota 1890 census
« on: Friday 01 June 12 12:38 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

Just a shot in the dark, but if anyone has access to the 1890 US Census, I'm trying to find details for Thomas Armstrong who I believe was living in or around the town of Hudson, South Dakota at that time.

He was born in England in 1867, was in Middlesbrough in 1881, but 'vanished' before he returned to England where he died in 1899.  Eventually traced the death notice in the local newspaper, which states he was 'late of Hudson, South Dakota'.

Any info much appreciated,

       Gordon.

Hello Shelly,

I don't think he had family, certainly none is mentioned in the death notice of the Middlesbrough newspaper, which merely says "son of ....."   and   "late of Hudson, South Dakota, USA".    No wonder I could never find him in the 1891 UK census  :)

Very many thanks for taking the trouble to look up the SD census for me, I'm truly obliged,

Best wishes,

       Gordon.

Gosh Pat, that was quick !!!

Thanks very much for that pointer, just what I needed.   I'll keep my fingers crossed for a Good Samaritan.

Best wishes,

US Lookup Requests / 1890 census problem
« on: Tuesday 21 February 12 14:26 GMT (UK)  »
I am seeking info on a Thomas Armstrong, born Carlisle England in 1867, moved to Middlesbrough, England by 1881, then appeared to vanish.  However have now come across his death back in Middlesbrough in 1899 - in between he was apparently in Hudson, South Dakota.
The US 1890 census could have answered many questions had it not been wiped out by fire and flood.   Anyone any ideas how I could proceed from here?

Many thanks,

      Gordon.
