In the 1869 South Australian Government Gazette there is listed a letter detained for sea postage addressed to Mrs James Devine at Forthou, Parish of Portland, St. Johns, New Brunswick. If this is my Mrs James Devine, then her maiden name was Gillately. I always thought there may have been a Canadian connection to my Gillately family. A couple of years back someone researching Gillately in Canada made inquiries to me about the family in Australia but I have lost contact.
Any Canadian connections among your Gillately/Gellately's?

Brian,
Sorry, I hope you forgive me but I rushed my little post last night before tea and omitted some important info. He was with the Australian Army, NX4265 however from what I can glean from newspapers of 1941 so far is that the other soldiers captured were British. (and that can mean NZ or Australian).
His debriefing says he was in hospital in athens during the withdrawal of troops from Greece so possibly not evacuated with his unit from Kalamata. How he got to the island of Milos is interesting and was he part of an organised force or chaps that had become separated from their units.
He passed away in 1950 so there are no family left that might have known. I am checking with the AWM in Canberra.

Thanks for your reply.
John

Researching Alec Devine who was captured during the Germain invasion of the island of Milos about 9th of May 1941, just before the invasion of Crete. About 118 British soldiers taken prisoner. I can't find much searching the internet but he ended up in Stalag 18 B, D and finally A.
Any help with research would be appreciated.....John

Still looking for a home for my John Gillatly born about 1820, first sighted in Tasmania, married a girl off the RAJAH and moved to South Australia before going off to die accidently in New South Wales in 1887. His intestate documents mention he said he came from Perthshire.
