Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Re: Date for this wedding please
« on: Monday 01 January 24 23:22 GMT (UK)  »
I have a photo of my aunt in June 1938, at age 8, wearing a remarkably similar bridesmaid dress to the young girl on the left hand side.

Lanarkshire / Re: McIvor/Mooney - Riordan marriage record

There is actually only one death entry (reference 607/ 429   Glasgow, Martha St) and it has both her married names on it so it will show up whichever names you use to search  :)

Scotland / Re: Scotlands People Essential Maintenance on 23 Nov 2022
« on: Monday 28 November 22 23:07 GMT (UK)  »
I have a Scotlands People Newsletter from August 2022. There could have been a more recent one but I can't be sure (the next most recent in my email is June 2021 and I do know there were some in between those dates which I obviously haven't kept).

It is so long ago I haven't a clue how or when I registered for the newsletter. I have two accounts and at one point I remember getting two copies of the newsletter every time it came out. I don't recollect that happening recently ???

It might be quicker to dispute the charge via your credit card

It might also have a better long term effect. If a lot of people have to claim back for double charges and so on the credit card companies will get unhappy. They are likely to have more clout than us mere users if they complain to iron mountain. Definitely woth a try anyway.

Lanarkshire / Re: Jamaica Bridge, fact or fiction?
« on: Wednesday 07 April 21 20:50 BST (UK)  »
I would guess your Mum is merging stories about two different bridges which are relatively close together without realising it. The "highland" bridge is likely to be what is known locally as the Hielanman's Umbrella on Argyle Street which intersects with Jamaica Street which is then the Jamaica bridge when it crosses the Clyde. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hielanman%27s_Umbrella - This Wikipedia article mentions Gaelic speakers meeting as your Mum suggests.

Scotland / Re: Question about Scotland's People Registers

My Dad died mid December and was searchable in the index by I think mid January the following year! I didn't think that they updated that quickly but it was definitely him  :)

The Common Room / Re: How do I stop Ancestry Automatically renewing?
« on: Tuesday 02 June 20 17:55 BST (UK)  »
Assuming Ancestry.co.uk (same as mine)....

- Log in as normal
- You should have your user name at the top right hand side of the screen with a little down arrow beside it. Click that.
- Click the "your account" option that appears
- Mine then brings up 3 white box type bits, "Your account", "Your membership?" and "Upgrade options". The "Your membership" box has a "cancel membership" link on the bottom right.

I agree it isn't very clear and I don't know if it only cancels when your subscription runs out or immediately.

World War Two / Re: Cannot find Award entry in Gazette
« on: Monday 02 December 19 00:18 GMT (UK)  »
I found the same with one of mine!! I knew that they had an award for two different things and could only find one on the search when searching by name. It turns out that when the gazette issue I needed was scanned to generate the searchable text it made an awful job of it.

I did find the entry in the gazette eventually but I had to go through the issues dated near when I thought it should be page at a time and read them very carefully. I found the search date totally by chance. William Harvie Thomson was a pilot (and the record that appears on search is for the polar medal in 1953) and his DSC in 1944 doesn't come up. However.... I discovered that, at the time, Flight magazine published lists of awards to air personnel and they also have an on-line archive. The publication in Flight was early July 1944 so I was finally able to find the Gazette record in mid June 1944.

Since you have an award date for the BEM of March 1941 you might be able to find it by hand. I did have a play but it wasn't coming up on any of the issues I looked at (searching for "British empire medal" got the correct section). Good Luck  ;D
