Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Death Notice in Bradford Newspaper
« on: Monday 30 October 23 18:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
My ancestor Hannah Bateman (nee Nowlan) died aged 28 in December quarter of 1854, in Bradford, Yorkshire. At the time of her death she was residing with husband William in Pit Lane. Having visited Bradford Local Studies Library in years past, I had seen from their indexing system that there was a death notice for her in one of the Bradford papers - which I neglected to get a copy of!

I wondered if anyone was in the habit of visiting Bradford Local Studies, and could get a copy of this for me, as I am unable to go myself.  I have tried searching British Newspaper Archive for this, but have had no luck.  The Bradford papers on BNA are - Bradford Daily Telegraph, Bradford Observer, Bradford Weekly Telegraph and Bradford Review.  I am unsure as to exactly which newspaper the death notice was in (obviously none of the above). I realise that this could be rather tedious, and would not blame anyone for not wanting to look, but thought I would try on the off-chance.  Thank you for reading,

Christine

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Bradford Moor Barracks Records
« on: Thursday 22 March 18 16:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
My 2x gt grandfather William Bateman (1826 - 1892) was a militia member in Bradford in the 1840s and 50s.  I think he was stationed at Bradford Moor Barracks.  Can anyone tell me if there are any records available for that period, and if they can be accessed?

Thank you,

Chris

Hi,
I think that Betty was born in 1791 - she was baptised 10 Nov 1791 at Wibsey Chapel.
Other Greenoughs/Greenhoughs born in Wibsey with a father called Joseph, a miner/collier, are -
Hannah bap 26 Jan 1783 Wibsey
John bap 23 Jan 1785 Wibsey
David bap 4 April 1787 Wibsey
James bap 14 June 1789 Wibsey
Mary bap 4 Feb 1794 Wibsey
Joseph bap 30 Aug 1795 Wibsey
I think that the parents were Joseph Greenough/Greenhough and Mary Dean
Hope this is of some use, and thank you,
Chris

Hi,
I've been trying to expand on my knowledge of the family of on of my ancestors, Betty Greenough/Greenhough, baptised 10 November at Wibsey Chapel, Wibsey.  Her father was Joseph of Wibsey, a miner/collier, and she married one John Bateman in Bradford in 1816.  On Ancestry I have found various others of that surname (spelt Greenough & Greenhough interchangeably), born in Wibsey in the 1780s & 1790s, who could be her siblings (David, James, Peter, etc).  Their father is also a miner called Joseph but unlike with Betty's bap record, his abode is given as Carr Lane.  I know that this address is a mile or so away from Wibsey, but wondered if there was anyone out there who may be able to verify if Betty and the rest might be siblings??

Any info would be appreciated,

Chris

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Jane Adams Baptism
« on: Monday 23 October 17 22:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Could someone look up a baptism for me, for my ancestor Jane Adams?
She became Mrs Thomas Marshall in 1833 when they married in Aldbrough, but I have never been able to locate a baptism record for her.
According to the 1851 census she was born in Hornsea about 1814.
I have found baptism records for various children of Christopher and Jane Adams, who lived in that area, and wondered if she could also gave been their child.
Any information would be much appreciated,
Christine

Thank you very much for the information!

Do you know if the men were paid anything for this service?

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Militia Service

Hi,

I recently found a marriage record for my ancestors, William Bateman & Ann Waddington, who married in Calverley in 1855, which had William as a private in the militia (the writing on the record is indistinct, but it looks like West Yorkshire Rifles Militia Regiment) at the time of the marriage (Ancestry record).  This military connection was news to me, and I wondered if anyone could tell me anything about this militia regiment?  William was a waggoner (carter/drayman), and I had not been aware that he had done any military service.  Could he have carried on his normal occupation at the same time as serving in the militia?

Also there are some criminal records on Ancestry, including for one William Bateman in 1848, which seem to suggest that drilling with militia was a crime??

Any information on this subject would be most gratefully appreciated!

Thanks Brian.
I didn't know that Calverley Moor was so close to Bradford.   That explains a thing or two.  William had previously been married to Ann's sister Hannah Nowlan, who had died.  The militia angle is something I discovered today.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Militia at Calverley

Hi,

My 2x gt grandfather William Bateman, a widower, married Ann Waddington in July 1855, at Calverley's St Wilfred's Church.  I have now found another record (on Ancestry) for that marriage, with William seemingly a private in the local militia.  He was a Bradford lad, and I'd had no idea that he'd ever been involved with a military organisation, either there or in Calverley (it was always a puzzle to me that the couple did not marry in Bradford, where they both resided).  His occupation was always listed in censuses as 'waggoner', 'drayman' or 'carter'.

Can anyone point me in the direction of any info I can glean on militia in that area, or know anything about how these things worked (how long men served and what it entailed).

Any information would be most welcome,

Christine
