Lancashire / Re: 19th Century Middleton Pubs?
« on: Tuesday 10 July 12 20:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I have just found an old book of mine which is called Middleton Pubs 1737-1993 and their licencees.  I have checked out the Hare and Hounds and this is what it says....
Simon Lancashire had the licence of the Hare and Hounds in 1870 followed by his wife, Martha, in 1890....  James Crawshaw was the licensee in 1891, followed by Joseph Taylor, a committee member of the local LVA, in 1902.  The owner of the Hare and Hounds around this time was William Hoyle and for a few years after his deal the pub was in the hands of his executors.  It then goes on describing the licensees and owners until 1989.

The first licencee of the pub was in 1809 but the author states that there has been a pub in the vicinity since the 17th Century.

If you want to know more (hope this helps) just let me know and I can copy the full page for you.

Cheers
Barbara

Hi,

I have just noticed your query re Middleton Parish (St. Leonard's) records on Lancs OPC - why don't you use the e-mail facility and ask Ken (who manages the site) to check out the certificates for you?  He might have a copy of the original of your family which might have more information than available on the web site.

I am transcribing records for Lancs OPC and have some baptism and burial records for St. Leonard's but haven't done any marriages for them - now struggling with baptisms for St. John's Salford - all in Latin. (Ugh !)

Good luck
Barbara

Hi,  I've just read your question about the Hare and Hounds and live just up the road.  Do you want me to call in to speak to the current landlord to see if he has any old records?  - Just out of interest the road at the side of the pub goes up to an old building which is being restored called Tonge Hall and many of my family are from that area.  What is your grandfather's name and do you have any more details?
Cheers

Hi, Just seen your query.  I had the same problem (but Manchester).  I tried the Genuki web site and found loads of churches.  I have looked up Leeds but don't know the area too well but here is the link.  Hope its useful

Yes it is C of E and is the oldest church in Middleton.  The link I gave you earlier shows the church in all its glory.

Take care

Trying to research this family from Middleton area, Lancashire.   Thomas Rothwell  c1798, Oldham, Lancashire, married to Martha Slack 1803 Middleton, Lancashire, children,Adam 1827, John Edward 1833, Elizabeth 1835 and Amelia 1837 all born Middleton.

Hi,  Have just joined Rootschat and found your query.  I have found a few of your relatives on Lancs OPC website http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Middleton/index.html.  Three of the children were baptised at St. Leonards church (in case you are vaguely interested I was baptised and married there too).

John Edward Rothwell - Son of Thomas Rothwell (Shopkeeper) & Martha of Middleton  22 Jul 1832 St Leonard, Middleton, Lancashire, England

Hope this is useful
