Hi Elise, Elizabeth and Andrew,  In a funny twist of fate - I recognised some of HC Marchall's photos in a set to postcards my company printed for the State Library to accompany the exhibition. Very excited that his photos of the 1st Battalion AIF are to be included and I'm looking forward to visiting the exhibition. It always amazes me how random events become interconnected. regards
Susan

Hi Elise, I just viewed the digital album and it is great to see your version includes another section of Cairo to Gallipoli. The album and index I have is Kensington to Cairo. I think the index booklet of photo captions should match up to your album. I will email you. Regards Susan.

The Common Room / WOULDS - surname pronuciation
« on: Sunday 08 September 13 23:23 BST (UK)  »
If your surname was written as WOULDS, and you lived in the Lincolnshire and West Yorkshire area in the 1800s, would your surname be pronounced WOLDS, WOOLDS or WOODS ?

Any suggestions  ???

Again, quite a lot on the Rev John Jukes of Yeovil, from the British Newspaper Archive:

Somerset County Gazette, Saturday 22 June 1839
On Wednesday last, the children of the Sunday School connected with the Independent Chapel, at Yeovil, were assembled (about 170 in number) at the house of their Minister, the Rev. J. Jukes, and were regaled in the orchard behind the house. They were suitably addressed on the occasion. About 350 visitors were present, teachers and friends of the School, who were favored with many interesting and encouraging statements by the Revs. Messrs, Jukes, Chapman, Price and Williams, relative to the good effects of Sunday Schools.

Disregard peeps!  ;D I found what I was looking for on the British Newspaper Archive.

Salisbury and Winchester Journal
, Monday 14 November 1836
Died, at Yeovil, on Wednesday, the 2nd inst., aged 18 years, after a few days’ illness, of effusion on the brain, William, fourth son of Mr. H. Etheridge, auctioneer. He was a very promising youth, and much and deservedly respected in the circle in which he moved.

Somerset Lookup Requests / Yeovil 1830s - Mr Etheridge and Mr Jukes

I am looking for some information on the full names and connections of a Mr Etheridge who died in Yeovil in Nov 1836. I have a diary entry as follows:

Poor Mr Etheridge died on the 2nd of November 1836 his funeral sermon was preached by Mr Jukes at his chapel on Sunday Evening Novr 13th 1836.

This leads me to believe he was a nonconformist and his funeral may have been at a Baptist chapel.

I have found a reference to an article in the Bridgwater and Somersetshire Herald, 27 April 1831, which refers to: Mr Jukes – dissenting minister, Yeovil and the execution of a highwayman. I have not seen the actual news item. Another news item 3 Dec, 1832, J. Jukes - Yeovil Board of Health along with Mr Wellington and Dr Penkivil.

I believe that Mr Wellington is George Wellington who was a former portreeve of Yeovil. He is an ancestor of mine.

Can anyone fill in information on:

A: Who was Mr Etheridge who died in Nov 1836. He may be related to a Henry Etheridge who was a real estate and insurance agent in Yeovil in about 1844.

B: Who was Mr Jukes (dissenting minister) in 1831? Is he the same man in the 1832 news article about Yeovil Board of Health? Is he the same man who preached the sermon in "his chapel" in 1836?

The dates do not appear to support that this as the renowned dissenting minister Andrew John Jukes (1815-1901), as he would only be 16 years old in 1831 and 21 years old in 1836.
