Hi JM,
Thanks for the good advise and I have done so immediately. Never thought of that, although the email address is inactive, but still well worth remembering.
Cheers,
Louise.

Hi Merlin,

I found the below message (noting it was posted in 2001) and am trying to contact the author of the message. I have written a letter to all  G South's in NSW in the hope of finding him as I would dearly love to find out what happened to my grandfather. Unfortunately as can be expected, email addresses get changed over the years and I haven't had any luck making contact this way.

Subject: [GALLACHER] GALLACHER HISTORY?
Date: Wed, 22 Aug 2001 10:07:47 +1000

WARMEST GREETINGS FROM AUSTRALIA!

I am new to the List and was hoping that someone would know a little about the history of the Gallachers of Scotland. I can not find the Gallacher's in my Scottish surname books, it would seem to be a rare family name.

I have just found my grandfathers mothers name was Mary Gallacher from Glasgow. Mary married in 1893 Joseph Devine of Kinning Field, Lanark. There son John, born 1901, became my grandfather. My mother was Peggy Devine.

I would like to find out if the Gallachers were members of a Clan or associated with an area, etc.
Looking forward to hear from you all soon.
Regards
Grant
Sydney, Australia.

Hi Merlin,

Yes Joseph was John's father. I know where the rest of the family are buried and have been to the cemetery, searched papers, everything I can think of to see if there are any clues as to John's whereabouts following his separation from Doris, but all to no avail sadly. I am led to believe that he remarried and had other children and am currenly trying to follow up that lead at the moment.

Cheers,
Louise.

Thanks JM, I had read that thread and wondered if there was a connection. Sounds like you all had fun doing it too. Still trying to work out if there is a link. Will post when I discover any news.

Cheers,
Louise

Thanks Monica,

Seems they are doing maintenance work on the site so it wouldn't work when I tried it. Will give it another go though as this is a great help. I'm learning so much thanks to all the help on here!

Cheers,
Louise

Who would have guessed there could be that many variations on a name! I found them on the 1871 census:

Bernard DEVINE - head - 32 - engineers labourer b. Ireland
Susan - wife - 33 - b. Lanark Glasgow
Peter - son - 6 - b. Lanark Glasgow
Joseph - son - 3 months - b. Lanark Glasgow

Also listed is a Catherine ...possibly McGarrlick who is 34 but I can't make out her relationship or occupation...may have to stare at it a bit longer!

Pardon my ignorance but what is "batch code of C119311" please?

You wonderful woman! The marriage cert is the right one. Interestingly Susan's parents names are different on this certificate to that of her death but Bernards are the same.

On Susan's death her parents are stated to be James Boyle and Susan Docherty yet they are John and Margaret Boyle (Docherty) on the marriage certificate.

Thanks so much Monica...I was getting frustrated so it's lovely to have made some more progress  ;D

Correction made to subject...after digging I believe that only Bernard DEVINE b. approx 1843 came to Scotland prior to 1865. Don't know whether he left Ireland with his parents Bernard DEVINE and Bridget GAFFERTY or not.

Hi All,

Thanks for the suggestions. I've dug a bit deeper and discovered Bernard and Susan Devine along with Peter and Joseph on the 1871 Census in Scotland. On this census it states that the children were born in Glasgow along with Susan the mother. It says Bernard is born in Ireland.

My problem is that other than the census records from 1871 & 1881 I can't find any trace of the children's births in Scotland anywhere. I was hoping to find at least one birth record so I could find out in Ireland where Bernard came from.

Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Louise
