Yorkshire (North Riding) / Re: Jose Wilkes/Wilks in Levisham

Thank you Ciderdrinker.

That is quite possibly her mother, the dates seem to fit. I will follow that lead and see where it goes.

Marriage could be worth a look too. I wonder Jose could be a pet name for Joyce, or even a different spelling, as Jose and Joyc-e sound very similar.

Yes, I looked at Levisham for baptisms in that era and no look. I even went through each page of the parish records online incase the transcribers had missed something.

There were a few burials;
1773; burial of Elizabeth wife of Robert Wilks
1778; burial Robert Wilks of Newton Dale
1785; burial Jeremy Wilks

I think I will look further into that Will too.

Thank you :-)

Thank you so much for that Neil :-) it's very kind of you.
Do you have any idea what (master1) means on the baptism 1785? Master as in sea do you think?

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Jose Wilkes/Wilks in Levisham
« on: Sunday 28 April 19 16:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I am trying to find the family of my ancestor Jose Wilkes. Her name is spelt Jese, Josey, Jose. Wilkes can be Wilks.
Could Jose be short for Josephine?

Here is what I know so far;

1798 19 Feb; marriage at Whitby st Mary the virgin to Robert Harrison, a schoolmaster. Jose is recorded as from the parish of Levisham, Robert from church parish.

1799 9 Jan; baptism of son Robert Harrison in Sleights, Eskdaleside parish register. Schoolmaster mentioned again.

1799 20 Apr; burial of Robert Harrison (senior) schoolmaster, recorded as Sleights.Eskdaleside parish register

1800 10 Dec burial of Jose Harrison Widow, recorded as Levisham. Eskdaleside parish register.

Sad story I know :-(

So I am trying to find out more about what happened to their son Robert Harrison (Bapt 1799)

I have tried to find Jose's baptism hoping to find her parents or siblings, as they maybe took 1year old Robert in when both his parents died.
I am also looking for Robert Harrison seniors parents, no look as yet, in case they took the young child in.

I do have Robert junior's marriage to Mary Ruston in 1824, Allerston and all his family from then on. But nothing from before his marriage. His first 5 children were born in Allerston between 1823-1830ish

He did become a schoolmaster himself, following in the footsteps of his father so I would think he would have kept a family connection to be able to do that????

He was living in Seamer by 1833 and I know from a directory that he was a schoolmaster there by 1840 at the latest. He remained a schoolmaster in seamer until his death in 1877.

In 1814 a school and dwelling house was built by lord of manor. Prob J W Denison esq in Seamer.

Any help or pointers in another direction I hadn't considered would be much appreciated :-)
Thank you

Hi there,

I wonder if you are still ok to look up within the parish registers for St Marys, Whitby.
If so, I would really appreciate a look for the baptism of Robert Harrison. I suspect there may be several.

I know that he married at St Mary's in 1798 to Jose Wilkes and that he was a bachelor and schoolmaster.
I am trying to find his baptism and hoping it is in Whitby, St Marys.
I would hazard a guess he was in his 20s to 30s when he married. They had a child in Sleights in 1799.
Thank you

The Common Room / Re: Ancestry problems, how is FindMyPast nowadays?

smudwhisk,

I must admit that recently I have been researching in North Yorkshire and Westminster and Middlesex on both Ancestry and FindMyPast, so perhaps that ties in with the list you gave, as at least the North Yorkshire and Westminster areas seem to be biased towards FindMyPast.

I suppose it's all down to which county you are researching as to which website holds the most parish registers or BTs. Along with how user-friendly each person finds the search process/display of results :-)

I think using both sites is an 'ideal' situation, but that's not always possible unfortunately.

Hi CB,

Thank you for your response.
Yes, I have had a look. Found one on find my past for John Swaddal 1692, which I ordered, but no useful relationships or other info unfortunately. It was from the York Prerogative & Exchequer Courts Of York Probate Index, 1688-1858 records at the Borthwick Institute.

Would you have any other ideas where to look for Wills?

I have found personally that the find my past site is much better for search results generally. Ancestry tends to through all sorts of unrelated records into the search results. It takes quite a lot of scrolling down sometimes to find the relevant record. I mean something as simple as putting a specific place into the search box and the results nearer the top arent in that place at all, but the ones further down are.

Find my past search results are more accurate. But then there is lots on Ancestry that is really useful, like the 'connected records' that can be viewed once you click on the census results.

I find that find my past has more 'original' parish records online, whereas ancestry has often just transcriptions of the parish register.

I think in an ideal world it would be great to have both find my past and ancestry at the same time! So then you can go between them to narrow down and highlight different search results.

Hi everyone.
I am at a bit of a standstill with my research and wonder if perhaps a fresh pair of eyes could shed some light on this  ???.

To start does anyone think it's possible that a Margaret can sometimes be recorded as Anne in the 1670s ?

My ancestor was baptised 1673; Susanna Swaddale . Daughter of Richard and Anne.baptised 29 June, Seamer

I found this on findmypast in both the parish Baptism record and the Bishops transcripts for Seamer. The only difference between them was the spelling of An v Anne. I found the name Swaddale can be spelt a lot of ways over the years also !!

The problem is, it appears that Richard's wife is called Margaret. Here is their marriage, in Seamer.

1667 Rich Swaddle & Margaret Hordan were married Aug 13th.

The first 2 children;

1668 Emmanuel the son of Richard Swaddale & Margaret his wife. Bap May 31
1670 Francis the son of Richard Swaddle & Margaret his wife, bap June 5

Then next;
1673 Susanna daug of Rich Swaddale & Anne his wife, bap June 29
1675 John son of Rich Swaddale & Ann his wife, bap Jan 28

I have searched page by page on the Seamer parish registers and the BTs between 1670 and 1673 inclusive, for the death of Margaret and a marriage to Anne with no results. I  realize it is possible for these to have happened outside Seamer, but suspect it quite unlikely the death did.

Then I came across a  Margaret Swoddil's death in 1706 Seamer. Several other things happened in that year too, all in Seamer;

1706 Oct 25 burial of Margt Swoddil
1706 Nov 19 marriage of Richard Swoddell & Jane Willis
1706 Jan 17 baptism of Joshua Swoddel

1715 baptism of Anne Swoodle dau of Richard & Jane. Seamer

1718 burial of Richard Swadoll, a Chandler, Apr 18th. Seamer

It seems quite unlikely that Margaret dies in Oct, Richard remarries 3 weeks later in Nov and a child is born 2 months later in Jan! However, there appears to be no other  Swaddale/ Swaddle/Swoddil etc having children or marrying in Seamer in the 1660s right up until at least 1721 (which is where I stopped looking).

The marriage and baptism in 1706 could be for Richard Swoddil son of Richard Swaddale, but I have found no baptism to suggest this. (ie father and son both called Richard).

Anyone have any ideas?
Thank you.
