A few clues.  Witness is a James McDonnough -- likely a brother -- and consent was given by her widowed mother so father is deceased.

Have you tried genealogiequebec.com (paid site)
Never knew of that site.  Thanks. :)

Canada / Ann McDonnagh. Born 1798 Montreal
« on: Friday 12 June 20 14:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I've hit a bit of a brick wall here.  I know that she was born in 1798 in Montreal, as several Census returns in England state this.  She was married to a British Soldier, Christopher Taylor in September 1819, after which the couple moved to England.

The issue I am having is that I cannot find any information about her parents or her background.   Can anyone help me find her parents and where the McDonnaghs originate?

I've attached details from the record of the wedding below.

"..married Cecillia Jane Watt on 12/07/1867 "

From this certificate...what names do you see for witnesses...what occupation for William....are there any addresses recorded?
Here are the details of Johns Death Certificate and Williams marriage certificate.

I've found out more.

John died on 16th February 1887 in the Glasgow Poorhouse.  He was both getting on and a former Cotton Weaver, which I gather was a trade in decline, so it kind of makes sense.  It still doesn't answer why his family never cared for him.   They must have been in touch though as William is on his statutory record of death.

Not going to get the poor house records to find out more until after the lockdown ends, sadly.

Johns father was William Taylor and his mother was Rebecca Torrance.   I'm searching for details on them.

On his death certificate Catherines maiden name is down as Neil, as is the case with their daughter Catherines birth certificate.

All I know about Catherine is that she died before him and was alive in 1867.  I also think she died outside Glasgow as I couldn't find any record of her death.

Not much else to add other than thought I'd give you an update.

Added: Stuck trying to find anything further on them  :-\
Thank you.  :)
I wouldn't dismiss it on those grounds. I have come across other Irish people who dropped the O' prefix.
Thanks.  I'll see what I can find based on this then.  Might be an opening.
If Catherine was a Roman Catholic she would have had to undertake to have any children baptised and brought up as Roman Catholics. But if John wasn't Catholic, and/or Catherine wasn't very devout, William may not have had a strong attachment to the Roman Catholic Church, and might have been happy to marry Cecilia in her Protestant church.
That's a good point.

One thing I have found, if this is correct, is some of the records state John was born in Paisley, some state Ireland.  Is that a common thing or are they almost certainly totally different people?

Thanks for the welcome!  :)

I did find the Catherine O'Neil birth in the RC records in Scotlands People, but discounted it as Williams death certificate had her maiden name as Neil, not O'Neil.  Don't know why it would have changed.  Sorry, I forgot to add previously.

Further, William married in a CoS.  I suppose they could have converted though.

I will get to the bottom of this!

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone could help me out with this couple.

This is the information I have.  They had a son William who died on 18/08/1902 and was born around 1848.  The son married Cecillia Jane Watt on 12/07/1867 and they were still alive at this point.

I believe that they also had a daughter Catherine who was born 24/01/1859.  Williams death certificate states John was a cotton weaver.  The marriage certificate states John was a handloom weaver.

I cannot find any record of this family on the census records, although I did find record of a West India merchant John Taylor who was married to a Catherine Taylor.  I really don't think this is the same couple though.  Further, I cannot find record of their birth or marriage (I suppose it is possible they weren't married though).

Further, I did find notice of a John Taylor standing trial for bigamy in 1872, although I doubt this is the same man as his occupation is listed as a marble mason.

Can anyone help me find out where they were from and their parents names?

I'd be really grateful.
