Hi, am trying to trace my paternal great grandmother. She was born in Ayott  St Peter, Hertfordshire around 1858.She married Robert PEAT in 1878 in County Durham. In all the census records she calls hersely Mary Jane, but her marriage certificate states her name as Mary Ann LORD otherwise MALIM.  Her father is named John MALIM but the name Joeph L also appears and has been crossed out and signed by the registrar. I assume the L to mean Lord. It was written before it was realised that he wasn't her actual father. It also states ather is deceased. Its definitely the correct marriage certiicate for my relatives, but it's a real puzzler. I wonder if there is anyone who has come accross MALIMS in Hertfordshire, or indeed any varints on the name. She had to make her mark, so with her southern accent and inability to spell correctly there are lots of margins for error on the recording of her name by the registrar!

Thanks very much for the offer of a look up-that would be great!  If he was 27 it sort of throws a question about the buriel record as well, but it may mean more possibilities.

I don't have a death cert. and have no idea when she died!  And am still not sure whether she was actually Mary Ann or Mary Jane!  It's so frustrating-like doing a 5000 piece jigsaw with no box lid!

She was a spinster, aged 20, and the marriage took place on 24/8/1878.

Thank you so much for bothering about this!

Does anyone know of a WILLIAM HAUXWELL/HAWKSWELL who was born around 1740 and left the North Riding to live near HULL?
He married ELIZABETH PEARSON in Hull in 1779 and had two sons, WILLIAM PEARSON HAUXWELL(1780) and EDWARD HAUXWELL(1781).
Most of their children were christened at Fish Street Independent Church, Hull.  Their names were ELIZABETH, ELIZA JANE, HENRY WILLIAM,EDWARD,CHARLES & WILLIAM.
CHARLES was born in THIRSK and he ended up at GREATHAM

WILLIAM senior died at COTTINGHAM in 1829 at the age of 89.
I would love to know where he originated!

Am not sure whether to risk the cost of a failed birth cert.-have already had one incorrect one this week (for another great-grandparent).  What do you think?

I did a short holiday placement there whilst doing my teacher training.  I think it would have been in 1970 or thereabouts.  I remember it as a happy place.

Hertfordshire / Mary MALIM or even LORD!

Hi!
Am trying to find more information on my greatgrandmother.
According to her marriage certificate (she married ROBERT PEAT in Co. Durham, Kelloe in 1878), she was possibly baptised MARY ANN MALIM-for name it reads "Mary Ann Lord, otherwise Malim", and in the coulumn for father it readS JOHN MALIM,but under that someone has begun to write JOSEPH L then crossed it out and written "deceased".  The alteration has been initialled by the registrar.  If "Joseph Lord wasn't there it would read as though John Malim, father, was deceased.  His occupation is given as a Railway Plate Layer.
In the 1881 census, and later ones, she is stated as having been born at AYOTT GREEN, ST. PETERS, HERTFORDSHIRE.
Strangely enough, on the census her name is written MARY JANE, rather than Mary Ann, but I have no reason to believe that they were two seperate people.  Her daughter(my Grandmother) was given the name Mary Ann, and as there is  known to have been a touch of eccentricity in the family,  I wouldn't be surprised if she had just decided to be Mary Jane to be different!
I would really appreciate any help in sorting this out.  I have been unable to find a Mary Jane Malim or Lord on the BMD index.

My husband has been trying to locate his many times greatgranDfather for several years!
We know that he was married to ELIZABETH PEARSON at HOLY TRINTY, HULL ion 14th december 1779. (vicar, Arthur Robinson, witnesses Elizabeth watson and William Pearson.)
He died at COTTINGHAM on January 30th. 1829 at the age of 89, which puts his birth around 1740.
William and Elizabeth had two sons, WILLIAM PEARSON HAUXWELL (1780) and EDWARD(1781).
WILLIAM PEARSON HAUXWELL married ELIZABETH COLLINDER in 1797, at SCULLCOATS, and they had several children, most of whom were baptised at FISH STREET INDEPENDENT CHURCH, HULL.. They were ELIZABETH, ELIZA JANE,HENRY WILLIAM, EDWARD, CHARLES AND WILLIAM.

If anyone recognises any of these names and can help with a birthplace for the original William, we would both be very grateful!
