Sligo / Re: Queenan from Co. Sligo
« on: Monday 06 October 14 21:57 BST (UK)  »
Some years ago I met an old gentleman from Dooballa, just outside of Boyle, who thought perhaps that my great uncle Charles Duignan may have married a girl by the name of Queenan.  I have tried to track down this info but with no luck.  There were Queenan families in the immediate area of Cuppanagh where my relatives lived and in the environs as well. This Charles Duignan was born in 1868 to Charles and Bridget (nee Dwyer from Annagh)Duignan of Cuppanagh, Sligo.  Charles Jr and his wife had two girls, Anna and Elizabeth who came to the states.  I have no idea when this Charles married and who his bride may have been.  I have come up with two girls born around 1892 and 1894 with the names of Anna and Elizabeth Duignan but  no record of parents. The dates of their births could fit in with Charles being their father  if he married between 1888 and 1891.
Good luck with your search.  I have been at this since 1961 with no or little  luck.

Hello
My Great grandmother was Anna Queenan, born in Sligo about 1837. Not sure about her parents as there could be 3 possibilty?
She married Patrick Whyte about 1856 in Sligo. Cannot find a marriage for her anywere.Anna had 11 children and died in 1922.
Very little info. was given on her death cert.
I live in Sydney,Australia, could someone please help me?
Sandra
The name was almost certainly Queenan, I am familiar with this family as I looked it up many years ago having a distant connection with the Queenans of Co Sligo who first settled at Newcastle and later the Durham coal fields, whilst I noticed your branch moved to North Shields and spread out from there.

I have never been able to establish if the families were actually related. As Quinan is usually pronounced Queenan it is easy to understand why it was sometimes spelt that way.

I may have been in touch with you in the passed on another board and if not it must have been one of your relations who is doing the same research.

Good luck,

J.T.A.

Thanks once again.  I think that maybe the Elizabeth Queenan listed on the marriages in Boyle may be Charles Duignan's wife only because I believe that one of their daughters was named Elizabeth, the other one was Anna and they both came to the USA and settled in San Francisco.
Where would I find info on the birth  of those girls, certs for birth, baptism, death, emigration info ?
For death certs post 1922 would I contact the registrar in Roscommon town? I have a Greene St, Boyle address for a registrar there. Am I correct to assume that prior to 1922 all certs would come from Roscommon town?
If I called a registrar and gave the person the surname, date of birth, townland, barony and civil parish and poor union would that help me find the death and marriage for Charles Duignan???
I feel with your help that I am getting closer to my hard to find ancestors.  Thanks  once again.

Shane, The Charles Duignan listed in the BMD Boyle, 1868 is my relative.I have his birth certificate and that is all I can find out about him.  Someone told me he married  a girl whose last name was Queenan but the person was not sure and they had two daughters both of whom came to the USA  but I dont know if there were other children. I went to the Catholic Church in Cloonloo and went through its records but could not find a marriage entry for him. Maybe I should have checked out the church in Boyle ......Since he was the oldest son I presume he inherited the land .  He had two older sisters Catherine( b 1865) and Margaret b (1867) Whether they married or remained single I have no idea....His two younger brothers Peter b.1871 is my grandfather and Pat b.1872 came to and settled in
Philadelphia.  The parents of these were Charles Duignan and Bridget Duignan nee Dwyer. MY grandfather lived to 85 and his brother Pat lived to almost 90.  I assume that Charles may have lived as long taking him into the 1940s at least..I have looked for his marriage cert as well as his death cert and have hit a roadblock. I was thinking about contacting the Roscommon Registrar Office in Boyle to see if either of these certs are registered.
Have you any suggestions.....And once again many thanks for all you have done,
.

Thank you, Shane, for your reply to my query concerning deaths in Ireland but I am still somewhat confused. How does one find out the district where the death is registered? My relatives lived in Cuppanagh, County Sligo but their births were registered in Boyle and Ballinafad, County Roscommon.  It is my gut feeling that my relatives died in Cuppanagh, Sligo. When searching the site I have about deaths in Ireland should I consider Sligo registrar office where they lived or do I choose the Boyle registrar  office .
Thank you so much for all your help.

When a person dies in Ireland especially in the early 20th century where would  the death be registered or recorded?  Would it be the same district as the birth was registered especially if the person  lived in the same area his/her entire life???????

Thank you for your reply. I cannot understand what happened to my Cuppanagh Duignans.  On my first trip to Ireland in 1961,  I met a man from Cuppanagh who knew my great uncle  Pat.  I have chatted with residents from surrounding townlands who told me that a road, Charley's Road, was named after Charles Duignan Sr. Some people recall the Duignans but cannot remember what  happened to them.  I have the birth certificates that I acquired in1961 for the children of Charles and Bridget Duignan who was from Annagh.
All the birth certificates name Cuppanagh as their residence but I noticed that the registration for them say Boyle, Ballinafad , these places are in Roscommon while Cuppanagh in in Sligo.. Does this have any bearing on my problem of locating them??????????????????????
I  appreciate your help so very much and thank you for it.

i have been trying to find a duignan family that lived in cuppanagh, sligo in the 1860s on. been through the censuses and no luck. the family was: charles duignan, bridget dwyer duignan, mother and father of:
catherine, margaret, charles, peter, and pat.  i have all their birth certificates but cannot find any information other than that.  peter and pat came to phila, pa in the 1890s, the others  remained in cuppanagh. the  son charles may have married a girl whose name could have been queenan and they had two daughters anna and elizabeth who later emmigrated to the usa.  i have been trying for years and years, even talked to people who knew them but these people can't recall what happened to them. any help is appreciated.
