Like others above I have not had any matches nearer than 3rd-4th cousins on any of the several sites my test is on for more than 3 years. However, being on several sites means that I can see how many others have followed the same advice to place their tests on multiple sites. That of course means that you cannot add the databases together to get the total number of people who have tested.

It is interesting nevertheless to see that Ancestry is still well ahead of the others and that its test database growth in 2023 was still accelerating.

I had not heard about dog testing before reading this, but I'm not surprised and maybe it's not fair to be cynical about it being a reflection of the dog-ownership madness that was caused by Covid apparently. The breeding of livestock, race horses etc. needs to avoid in-breeding, so ensuring that this doesn't happen using science like DNA is quite common. I can't see why this shouldn't be true of dog breeding as well.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: DNA to solve brickwalls?

Good question. Firstly you are correct to consider using Ancestry if you do go down the DNA route. That's because it has by far the largest DNA database of all the DNA companies. After testing you can widen your net by uploading your Ancestry test results to a few other sites. Ancestry, however, will not let you upload test results if you test with another company, so if you don't start with Ancestry you cannot access their database.

Testing should come with a warning however. You can get results that you don't expect and which can be very upsetting (I have personal experience). Nevertheless I have widened my family tree enormously as a result of testing, with cousins from families I had never heard of before.

Hello

I wasn't aware of the ownership of the EBay site until I saw this post and I am sorry for his loss.

I would just add that I tried to use the link posted by Ben and it failed to open. I searched for the name and found a reference to the Ebay site on Facebook with a link but that too failed to open.

I think that how frequently you look may depend to some extent on why you tested in the first place and what the outcome was. I tested simply to try to break down brick walls but the result was that I suddenly didn't know who my genetic father was. The need to find out immediately became all-consuming so I now look every day. If the result had been otherwise I would probably not look more frequently than every couple of days or even weekly.

The articles can be retained by using screen capture software that can capture vertical scrolling screens

Are you able to say what such software is called please because that is something I've long wanted to do

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / MyHeritage relationships confusion
« on: Sunday 15 October 23 20:59 BST (UK)  »
My DNA was uploaded to MyHeritage but I find the relationships they ascribe to each match to be confusing. For example matches with higher cMs and more segments are often shown as more distant relatives than other matches with less cMs and segments. That seems illogical to me but maybe someone here can tell me why?

Well spotted AntAM and thanks for the additional information. I have PM'd you about your connections to the Meenaghan families in Rinnashinnagh and Gortmelia.

Thanks for all your replies. To be fair to them I misread their note that said it will take 2 to 4 weeks etc. to mean completion of the entire process, not thinking that it might take 4 weeks or more for the package to cross the Atlantic Ocean and then the USA. But on re-reading I can see that they were referring to exactly that part of the journey.

It has now been slightly over 4 weeks and it still hasn't arrived today. When I contacted them they replied quickly and asked whether I'd like a new kit to be sent, so I agreed. Then today they sent another email saying that my query had been referred upwards and again offering to send out a new kit, if my original one hadn't arrived within the next 7 days!  A bit of a left hand, right hand problem!

As Gadget commented, I have also received the warning email from them today about the potential security breach, but I had already changed my password and turned on 2-factor authentication.
