Family History Beginners Board / Re: lost at Sea

Thank you Cuffie.

Yes, that’s the one, Mary was my Great Grandmother. I’ve learnt something new there as I didn’t know that’s where Mary was buried, so thank you for that.

That’s a good point re marriage dates for their children, I shall do some digging.

Thank you all, much appreciated  :)

At least it looks like 1930 is correct.

Where do you find the newspaper reports please?

That’s interesting thank you. Out of interest, which newspaper report are you looking at?

I don’t think so. I’ve made contact with someone who has an alternative date of death of 1926 as opposed to 1930.

Just to resurrect this, I never did find a death certificate although I did find these newspaper reports.

Just goes to show how wrong family memories can be, lost off a trawler on the Dogger Bank indeed 🙄

Thanks both. Certainly seems an odd turn of phrase to modern ears! 😄

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with inscription in a prayer book?
« on: Friday 26 March 21 10:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

My Grandfather was in the Royal Engineers, it would appear as a boy soldier. I’ve done a bit of digging previously and it would appear that his Army number is too late for WW1 which would make sense as he was born in 1901.

Any way, I’d appreciate it if anyone can decipher the prayer which appears in his Army Prayer book, the original of which is now stored at the Royal Engineers Museum.

I’ve got the following:

Lead not into Temptation
Leave us not when in
Temptation Mother Pure
Boy sapper Naylor
**************
heard (?) us two only******
**** the shadows flee
*********

Any ideas?

Great stuff, thanks Shaun.

Yes, the records then go on to talk about a self inflicted gunshot once he got to France  :(
