Family History Beginners Board / Re: Best use of search time on location

 :)

When you are in Sussex you should try to call in at The Keep https://www.thekeep.info where the Sussex Family History Group https://sfhg.uk has its research room - we are open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 10-4 and Thursday 10-1. There are volunteers available to help with any Sussex research queries.

If you are planning to visit graveyards with a view to taking photos of gravestones bear in mind that many are hard to find, may have been moved / laid down so try to establish if there is a stone to see first.

There are far too many amazing places to experience in Sussex if you haven't been before: the Downs, the Weald, the coast but maybe visit Chichester, home of West Sussex Archives and the county town and Arundel. Also the Weald and Downland Museum https://www.wealddown.co.uk which is just north of Chichester.

But to my mind, you can't beat the many beautiful rural villages that are scattered around the county!

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / FTDNA haplogroups COMPLETED
« on: Saturday 19 March 22 09:42 GMT (UK)  »
I think I have just found the answer - enlarging the screen revealed boxes saying they were as yet unknown. Perhaps I found out my parents' group using one of the other companies.

Good morning,

This is probably a very silly question but is it possible to find out the haplogroups from an FTDNA Family Finder test?

The matches have just been generated for a test I am managing for a male (non blood) relative and I would find it helpful to know.

I don't remember having the same problem working out my haplogroups using my parents' tests!

Thanks,

Liz

Armed Forces / Shornecliffe Army Camp & Barracks
« on: Thursday 06 January 22 14:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I was very excited to find my great uncle at Shornecliffe Army Camp & Barracks in the 1921 census. It is unquestionably him.

I am puzzled though because of the 20 men on the page all but my uncle and one other have their "rank or rating" and "service and branch or arm of service" filled in. Several have -"- type ditto marks but not him so I can't assume he was the same as the line above.

Can anyone suggest why he would be at the camp if he wasn't serving? (He was demobilised in 1919.) To be honest I was expecting to find him in prison (as per family rumour) so this is quite a surprise!

Thank you,

Liz

This is not encouraging me.  I am searching for a John Hayward, who married my great grandaunt and I can find no records of him before their marriage, and he didn't put any father's name on the marriage record.   So I must resort to finding John Haywards and looking for clues.   I may need to give up on this one.

Janpearey - where is your John Hayward supposed to be? I have a few lot in my tree!

I wonder if he wanted to make himself closer to Daisy's age? He's a few years older as it is? If she always believed that was is birth date it would explain why his death registration matches the 1939 register. Of course - it could be a complete red herring!

Hi,

In 1911 it looks like he is a servant at The Old Steine Hotel in Brighton but his forenames have been switched round - you can see the census on Family Search.

I'll see if I can find him earlier.

ADDED: but this would mean he was born c1876

Sussex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Elizabeth Bray birth 1595 or thereabouts
« on: Thursday 04 February 21 10:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Have you ruled out the Elizabeth Bray baptised in Balcombe 16 Feb 1594/5 daughter of John?

I know it is quite a distance but there don't seem to be any Bray's baptised at the end of the 16th century in Mayfield or Rotherfield at all.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Sharing only 360 Centimorgans with a 1st cousin
« on: Thursday 04 February 21 09:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I don't want to get your hopes up as I think it would be important to see where your matches lead you but from my experience it is possible that the "wrong relationship" is down to the different versions of the test.

Dad and I tested with 23andme years ago and I was definitely his daughter. Mum later did a test and I was also her daughter - so no surprises - everything as expected. Dad's cousin also had the correct relationship to us both.

Then Dad and I tested with another company (I have been trying to help sort out an adoption). To my horror Dad was now my sibling. The shared cM simply were not sufficient for him to be my father. After months of the company refusing to accept there could be anything wrong on their part I was eventually offered a new (free) test for Dad at the end of last year on the grounds that his test was an old version but they would not admit that there had been any mistake in labelling us siblings. Sadly it was too late as Dad had died in the meantime. Fortunately the 23andme test (and Dad's cousin's test) supported him being my father (not to mention an incredibly strong family likeness!) but I really feel for anyone caught up in this scenario who doesn't have the proof I had because of the problems it could unnecessarily cause.

I hope you manage to sort it out but would strongly recommend following up the matches first to see if they come from just one side or both. If you have any other cousins that could test that would also be helpful.

Liz

PS I don't think it will be because of her having the Health version.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Is he my Great-Grandfather?
« on: Saturday 23 January 21 12:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Quote
Sorry, my explanation is terrible! According to the Ancestry tree I have built, I'm 2nd cousins with the grandchild of John Smith, which would make my Nana her half Great-Aunt I'm assuming?

Sorry - I did misunderstand! You would be half second cousins with John Smith's granddaughter if your Nana was John Smith's half sister. I had read your opening post to say that John Smith was your nan's father:
Quote
It transpires that this man's son was my Nana's Mum's best friend, let's call him John Smith.
and
Quote
right this proves it, her Dad was John Smith.
and
Quote
if John Smith is her Dad.
.

Anyway - half great aunt and half second cousins fit the DNA cM matches you give well.
