According to websites, after being a miner and before going to Spain he went to Coleg Harlech and then Ruskin College Oxford.

Swansea University have a 2 hour recording of him mostly talking about his experiences in Spain but might include something about his life afterwards.

South Wales Echo 22 March 1989 says he was then aged 75 and taught for 22 years before retiring. Previously a miner.  There are newspaper articles  in connection with his service with the International Brigade in Spain in the 1930s and subsequent commemorations and television programmes, and his campaign against opencasting near Rhymney in the early 1990s.  These articles include some biographical information.  Some mentions of his work as a Councillor, and being a teacher.  Newspapers accessible via the British Newspaper Archive or Find My Past.

Europe / Re: 1635 French death (from notary records by Rodiere)

This is what I was referring to, source as above:

"Maison  de  l'Ecu-de-Flandres ,  puis  du  Lion-Noir  (1689-1640).  La  première
partie  de  cette  maison  avait  formé  la  maison  de  l'Ecu-de-France  ;  au  xvuie  siècle ,
la  seconde  partie  s'appelait  l'hôtel  des  Américains,  nom  qu'elle  a  conservé  jusqu'à
nos  jours."

The page numbers aren't very clear but if you search for "Flandres" it comes up as the first of two references.

A building called "Ecu de Flandres" is referred to in "Topographie historique du vieux Paris" here on Internet Archive:

Seems to have existed in the early decades of the 17th century but later became parts of buildings with other names.

The Common Room / Re: Is there a way to know what journey a ship made?
« on: Thursday 13 March 25 16:53 GMT (UK)  »
The latitude and longitude at the time of the death are on one of the pages from the ship's Official Log.  It's image 261 of a set of 470 images in FamilySearch Film # 008395641.  This link should go to the correct image:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSBJ-J36S-T?lang=en&i=260

If for some reason it doesn't, the second and third links in jonwarrn's reply number 7 above both link to that film and set of images.   In either case, from the image which comes up, just go to image 261.

Right clicking on google maps displays latitude and longitude, so by trying different positions it is possible to see roughly where the ship was.  South west of Lisbon, not west as I said yesterday.

Kind of you to say that, but I wasn't getting anywhere until you provided the Familysearch links.  I didn't know they had shipping records.

From the latitude and longitude by the ship's log entry for the death, I think Morrisons was off the coast of Portugal at the time, west of Lisbon.

The Shields Gazette 24 June 1858 says Morrisons sailed 17 June for Barcelona.
