Scotland / Re: Margaret Beattie nee Wilson, m.1868- Help!

I know I'm a bit late to the show but I believe we share the same Rankin ancestors from Stranraer.
Alexander Rankin (born Ireland, 1791) and his wife, Mary McGhee (born wigtownshire) are my 4th great grandparents.
They had seven children: Alexander, James, Jane (aka Jean), Richard, Thomas, William and Mary.
They were Tile and Brickmakers and either rented or owned the Clasmahew factory in Stranraer. I'm still looking into this.

Richard Rankin (born 1819) is my 3rd great grandfather, he married Sarah Armstrong and later, Agnes Watson.

Richard and Sarah's daughter, Elizabeth is my 2nd great grandmother and sister to Margaret who married David Cosh.

They were a huge family and I'm still researching them...a few 2nd and third marriages, makes it more interesting!

I'm going up to Glasgow this Saturday, so will ask my dad if this rings any bells.
Thanks again for all your help, you've been amazing!

Did you get an official record of their marriage? as this would show her father's name and help tie her to the correct person when looking at the census returns, births and baptisms

Yes, I have the certificate from Scotlands People. It gives the mother and father as William Moore and Jane Anne Hoggan - or Hogan as it appears on the Irish census records that Dathai found.
I think Dathai has found the right family.

I can't thank you all enough for your help. I'm fine until I trace ancestors back to Ireland and it seems that all come from Ireland on both sides of the family.
I have, amongst others, Flynns (or O'Flynns), McGaugheys (or McGeacheys) and Dunbars. I seem to be stuck but will persevere before calling on you for help!

I've just logged back in and I'm amazed to see all of your replies - thank you so much! I've not been getting email alerts, I'll check my settings.
I now know that Christina Moore and John Roberts married on 11th March 1924 at Somerville Memorial Church, Keppochill Rd, Glasgow.
I still don't know for sure when she came to Glasgow and my dad doesn't know either. Not a great deal to go on.
I'm going to read over all of your replies as I see there are links to census'.
Thank you so much for taking the time to look into this for me.
Dathai - you asked about St.Francis at Cumberland Street, Gorbals. I'm pretty sure this is where my dad married his first wife. Someone in my dad's family definitely married there, I'll need to go through the family tree and check.
My dad lived in the Gorbals for years, but the name Andrew McGrath doesn't mean anything.

I can't believe it's been so long since the original post...I've no idea why I didn't respond at the time!
I've only recently started researching again. My dad said his mother came from the Coombe, I'm guessing it must have been the liberties area, as you suggested Anne. I'm guessing it was quite a poor area too.
I have more info on her parents, they were Jane Ann Hoggan and William Moore.
I'm sorry I missed the replies all those years ago - especially Chris' who I see passed away in 2009. Sounded like such a jolly man as well.

Sarah.

Northumberland / Re: Matthew Bell/ Salkeld/Woolsington Hall
« on: Friday 18 July 14 16:38 BST (UK)  »
Further to my last post, here are the Salkeld's, again to make it simple following the father/son line:
1866-1925 Thomas William Salkeld married to MaryJane Wood
1844-1919 Richard Salkeld married to Mary Ling
1819-???? John Salkeld married to Isable Salkeld.
Now, I'm not sure if Salkeld was Isable's maiden name or not....anything's possible!
If anyone has any more information on this branch of the Salkeld's I'd really appreciate it.

I'm really hoping that some one can help me out. I'm doing my husband's side of the family tree and he has Bell's and Salkeld's in his family. I'm not sure if they're related to the Bell's at Woolsington Hall and the Salkeld's at Corby Castle.  Here are the list of names going back from 1887 to 1733, following the father/son line. I have names of siblings but thought this would simplify things:
1887-1945 William Bell married to Eliza Gotts
1865-1912 Thomas Bell married to Ann Taylor Jefferson
1831-1891 William Bell married Francis Hutchison
1801-1868 John Bell married to Margaret Weatherburn
1764-???? Arthur Bell married to Ann Brown
????-???? John Bell married Margaret Mitchelson

I'll post the Salkeld side separately.  Would really appreciate any help on this.

My dad's first wife was Jessie Anderson, from the Gorbals, Glasgow. It looks as though this is the same Anderson you have stumbled across at Portland Street, Gorbals.
Oops, just checked the date and not possible as she was born in the 1920's! However, strong possibility that it is the same Andersons.

Thank you so much! I've just checked and these are definitely my relatives! I might be able to trace them or their children now. Did you get all of this from the census?

The Adams are cousins on my mums side. I think Tommy Adams lives in East Kilbride, and there is also a Brian Adams who lives in Canada. I know there are alot more of them, I just don't know where.
