Hi Richo

Welcome to Rootschat. There is a lot of information on this thread.

I assume you know that through John James PHILP,  you are descended from first fleet convict John Nichols.

Hi Maxidog

In relation to the Australian post office employment: post office and telephones used to be one organisation called Postmaster Generals Dept (PMG) until some time in the 2nd half of the 1970s. It was split in two parts: Australia Post and Telecom Australia. Telecom Australia eventually became Telstra and became privatised.

I remember reading the Courier Mail article.

They were only married for two years, so my questions were: was it a happy marriage? Were their any children?  The defacing looks neat and deliberate, as if they wanted to remove the connection to her husband.

This is an intriguing story.

Perhaps Steven's mother did die in childbirth in Australia with a subsequent pregnancy. Not sure what name the death would have been registered under.

For anyone not familiar with the area; Gundurimba is very close to Lismore. So it looks very likely that this is your Elsie Alice.

If so, we would love to know what you found out from the certificate.

I haven't done a DNA test, hoever I believe that can be done through companies such as

There was a British celebrity on Who Do You Think You Are, who uncovered Indian heritage. A soldier who was stationed there had a child to an Indian woman. When the soldier died, the child was sent back to Britain to be raised by her grandparents, and the Indian heritage was covered up. I can't remember the celebrity's name; however I was wondering if a similar situation could have happened in your family. This would explain the lack of knowledge about his mother and his own birthplace.

EDIT  The celebrity was Olivia Colman  - her ancestor was employed as a soldier by the East India Company
