Lanarkshire / Re: Robert Herbertson c1804-1879 Who actually were his parents?

family.history2003 I'm hoping you have 'notifications' turned on as I note that you have not re-visited Roots Chat since your post above. I'm am very interested in your 'big booklet' and the source of the information contained therein. The first certificate I obtained in 1975 was Robert's death certificate which showed his parents as Robert and Margaret and it has taken a lot of time and effort to prove to myself that the death certificate is incorrect. It would be very satisfying to have some proof of  my supposition.

Thank you 'Family_History' for taking the time to reply.  When you say you have a big booklet what does that actually mean? Do you have a date of birth for Robert or a record of his birth? Who are you descended from? Very keen to hear more as I have been researching Robert since 1975.

According to this record his alias was "William Waddington". Might be worth checking under that name.

Thanks for the suggestions. I suppose it is possible that he worked at the mint but given his character I very much doubt it. And why be elusive about it if he did? I was wondering whether it was being used as a general term for someone who would do anything to make money.

Thank you both for your suggestion.  No Maddys52, I don't think that is the same Henry Hobbins. Mine came out as a free man to Australia but died a tragic death in 1848 in the Geelong watch-house die to intemperance and the cold.

The Common Room / What is a 'Money-Maker'
« on: Thursday 12 May 22 22:14 BST (UK)  »
In 1836 Henry Hobbins arrived in Tasmania from Birmingham, England. The ship's captain, in a report stated that Hobbins gave his occupation as that of 'Smith in general' but the captain stated the Hobbins is 'very generally believed to be a Birmingham Money-Maker'.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what is meant by this.  I get the impression it wasn't complimentary.

Yes James married 3 times. Catherine Rankine remarried in 1860 to William Gray. Just downloaded the marriage certificate 5 minutes ago.

Who is named as James H's wife in his will? Who was the informant on his death certificate?
Catherine Rankine is named as his wife. John Thomson his nephew was the informant.
Surely Catherine Rankine was the wife of Alexander Herbertson, not of Alexander's father James?

Nope - there was a fair age difference.

That is a different Andrew, Neale. He stayed in Tasmania and died there in 1874.  Our Andrew arrived in Victoria from Glasgow in 1852 aboard the 'Brooksby'. Indexed as 'Andrew Hubertson'
That directly contradicts what you say in your opening post, where you apparently had no idea when Andrew arrived in Australia.  :)

Apologies Neale. I had prepared some of the text of my original post some time ago and neglected to update it. I have since found Alexander arriving as well in 1854 aboard the 'Contest' from Glasgow. Indexed as 'Alexander Rerbertson'.  (That took some finding)

I then have him arriving again in September 1857 with his wife Catherine and children Margaret, Elizabeth and Mary. Aboard the 'Commodore Perry'. Indexed as 'Alex Haburton' He apparently returned to Scotland to collect his family. I can't find him on the outward bound passenger lists.
