United States of America / Shipping: New Zealand to San Francisco
« on: Thursday 28 February 19 22:26 GMT (UK)  »
I need a shipping report for the arrival of the "Pilgrim" which left Auckland NZ on Nov. 18 1849. With Mr. and Mrs. Scott and child on board. The Pilgrim was at Pitcairn Island on 26th March 1850, so I calculate she arrived in San Francisco May/June of that year.  Mr. and Mrs. Scott were John Scott and his wife Mary Georgina (nee Sampson) Scott and the child was their niece Camilla Beverly Scott Sampson, an early pioneer in Marysville Yuba County, California. Her father was Charles Beverley Sampson, also on the voyage. I have evidence that John, Charles and Camilla were all in Marysville in 1853 but no mention of Mary Georgina. If shipping records of passengers and manifest, or newspaper clippings exist for the Pilgrim, I'd really like to know, or, if MGS died on the voyage.

Don't forget that RootsChat members are very helpful - you could always try the "Deciphering" Forum, when you get stuck.  ;)

That's good to know.  Have worked out that all "d"s are written like "b"s and the "s" in she is written  like a fancy "G"  while in words like assess the first s at least is written like a long tailed "f" but there may be phrases that elude me. Can jpeg snips be added to the deciphering forum?

LizzieW, know what you mean by businessmen and wills. Family oral stories confirm a will was made by Gt Gt grandfather and he left an estate in excess of $30,000 US$s yet he was declared intestate and the last Administrator (and last living heir)was only granted 800 by the probate court.  We'd love to know how all that wealth was gobbled up. Haven't found a copy of the will but know what happened to the original.

Thanks everyone. That worked well and the two wills arrived within a week. Now, the unenviable task of deciphering! ??? If I fail, I will take them to a chemist to get them filled! ;D

Married 5 march 1834 at Leven, Beverley East riding of York.
I actually know quite a bit about this family member but would like to make contact with a direct descendant to see if they have a photograph of Charlotte Harriett nee Sampson.

So if it shows 23 June Administration (with the will and codicil) as written, white on black background, am I to understand  this would also give the will. He died in 1839, outside the 1858-1996 choice and a claim for a new administrator was launched in 1870's

I found her record. What does the statement "With two codicils" mean?
