Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Re: National Newspaper archives
« on: Sunday 11 November 12 12:06 GMT (UK)  »
Reminder to all RootsChat posters:  it is not permitted to make request look-ups from subscription sites.  Most sites contain terms and conditions which do not allow this.

The British Newspaper Archive has an offer of 15 free credits if you register as a member.

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1911 census up please.........................
« on: Wednesday 07 November 12 17:34 GMT (UK)  »
I totally agree KG, I just wondered if the issue was checked regularly, or will this be the case for the foreseeable future???

All RootsChat policies and guidance are kept under regular review.  The Guidance on the 1911 census issue was updated in September - see here:  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,355484.0.html
Although originally posted in 2009, it has been changed over time to reflect the current situation.  Advice from management is still that no look-up requests are allowed for the 1911 England & Wales Census.

Since RootsChat is privately owned and administered, the owners have developed policies and guidelines to protect the site and themselves.  As always, the moderating team ask that RootsChat members respect these policies.

Completed Census Requests / Re: 1911 census request please
« on: Friday 19 October 12 12:00 BST (UK)  »
I'm sorry but RootsChat does not allow look-up requests for this census.  Please see here:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,355484.0.html

A number of sites still have the last column blanked out and there seems to be no firm news on when it will be removed.

I'm afraid that RootsChat does not allow requests for look-ups from this census.

Can i upload it here ??
not in full

in stages maybe ?
only a small part if you cannot decipher it.

or will it be copyrighted somehow?
Definitely.

Perhaps best if you ask if someone is prepared to look at it for you off-list?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: McFarlane Will
« on: Saturday 25 February 12 11:57 GMT (UK)  »

It's ok for you to post the next section of the will if you need help on it. You just can't post the whole document at once since it is subject to copyright. Just post it in chunks.

As Prue has already said, only small portions of wills downloaded from any internet source or copied at a record office may be posted here for help with deciphering the writing.

We recognise that not everyone finds the reading of this old handwriting easy to master.  We don't mind difficult words or sentences being posted but it must NEVER add up to the whole document.  Copyright conditions do not allow such documents being reposted or republished.  RootsChat must protect itself on this point.

Shaunymac - please don't be put off asking for help   :) .  RootsChatters love such challenges.  Please look at the links to resources on old handwriting.  Many of the tutorials are very good and once you realise that many of the phrases used are the same in every will you look at, it gradually becomes easier to understand the old lettering.  Please don't give up - everyone begins as a novice and many find they have the eye after a few tries.  Not everyone will become as expert as some, just as not all photo restorers find it easy to begin with.  A little practice helps.
