Skoosh,

Thank you very much for your message. The local pronunciation of Cowie as Cooie certainly helps to explain the variant spelling Cuy!  I didn't know that Rathven was pronounced as Raffen so that is useful to know as well.  :)

Colin,

Thank you very much for your reply to my post.  I have been looking at the Fiddler families in the four parishes you listed where a baptism for a Margaret Fiddler has been recorded.  The Cowie 'Rover' family were all fishermen and so the Cromarty and Slains references are especially interesting.

The Cromarty family is also interesting because one of the children was named David. One of James Cowie's sons was also named David but it wasn't a common name among the fishing families in Buckie at that time and I have often wondered where it came from.

I think it is very possible that one of the Margaret Fiddlers you have found is the one who married John Cowie but, without further information,  it is going to be difficult to work out which one!

I am still hoping that someone may have John Cowie and Margaret Fiddler hidden away among their ancestors!

My husband's great great grandfather was James Cowie who was born in the Parish of Rathven somewhere between 1789 and 1793.  His death registration entry gives his parents as John COWIE 'Rover' (fisherman) and Margaret FIDLER.  I have found their marriage in 1789 in the Parish of Rathven (John Cuy/Margaret Fidler) but I cannot find James's baptism or any other children from this marriage.

Does anyone else have this couple in their family tree?  Does anyone know where Margaret Fidler might have come from?  I cannot find any mention of this surname in the surrounding parishes apart two marriages for a Hannah Fidler - one to a James Cowie in 1799, and one to Cosmo Murray in 1809, both in the Parish of Rathven.  Were Hannah and Margaret sisters?

Hannah Fidler and Cosmo Murray had four children baptised in the Parish of Rathven:
Helen     1810
Jean       1812
Mary      1814
Elspet     1817
George   1819

Grateful thanks to anyone who can help.

Thank you very much for your suggestion. I hadn't thought of entering the information as a postem against the entry on Free BMD but will now do so.  :)

Thank you Stan and Priscilla for the extra information.

Yes, this is an unwanted certificate which I've had since 2002.  I was trying to solve a mystery in the Pollard part of my family and thought that this certificate might hold the key - sadly it didn't.  Thankfully the mystery was eventually solved.

Hello Watson,

Thank you very much for your reply to my message.  It does appear that the Joseph Jacques you have found is the person I am looking for, even though he never appears to have been listed as a photographer!

Best wishes,

Tamarclaire
