Thank you so much both of you. I had found Greenlaw farm just now from the map  DonM posted -  Farnell on that map was Fernell in those days.
Maisondieu at last! Thank you Forfarian. Joseph was a blacksmith on his marriage in 1832 so was probably at the little Smithy just to the south west of Maisondieu. Unfortunately he died before 1838 and his wife remarried. They were living in Nether Tenements by 1841 which is where his wife lived at her first marriage. How interesting that your cousin lived there too at the same time. They certainly would have known each other.:) It is also good to see that both of these farms and the shape of the fields etc are still as they were, looking at the side by side views.

Angus (Forfarshire) / Maison Dieu, Brechin

18 Aug 1832 my 3 x gt grandfather Joseph Archibald, a blacksmith of Maisondieu, married....at Brechin.
All I can find of this place is the hospital/chapel :
"The Maison Dieu hospital was founded in the 1260s to serve Brechin’s poor. It seems to have still been in use in the 1700s. But by the 1800s the chapel had been partially demolished and was in use as a stable."
I wonder if anyone could tell me whether this could have been an area of Brechin or could he have had a blacksmith's shop within the stables perhaps.
Also he was born in a place called Greenolar??  Farnell. I cannot find this place either. I have attached a copy of the baptism. Perhaps someone could decipher the name better than me. I am not familiar with the area at all.

Does anyone have access to Hadleigh ER's for the years 1925 -1938 or is visiting Bury St Edmunds in the future and will be able to do a look up for me please? I will give details in a pm. Thanks Kathy

Thank you both for your replies, I'm so grateful for your efforts. Poor Geoff you must have been exhausted!
Sorry for the delay in replying to you both, I have been away and for some reason missed email notification of these.
Looks like I've may have come to a dead end with this but I will contact Ancestry and see where those contacts received their information from.
Many thanks again,
Kathy

Yes , I am well aware of that!!  Would be grateful for a look up at Latchington; it would maybe help to solve part of the puzzle. If it is a marriage the witnesses could prove useful. I followed the line to Utah in the hopes of finding some clue  but I'm not really interested in "married ins" .

Hi Geoff,
I have been having a dig around Ancestry and Family Search and found Mary Barnard married John Coolbear not Colbia  (you just hear the name being spoken can't youand the fact he made his mark not signed) from Mundon, Essex. Having found that I came up with 11 Family trees on Ancestry with them both. Mary and son David followed their daughter Caroline to Utah with the LDS. Have them on New York Passenger Lists and USA Censuses. Husband John Coolbear stayed behind and died Essex. From the trees on Ancestry and censuses it would appear Mary was born 1806. Trees give 4th May.
So Mary was the elder sister.

However:
The marriage at Tollesbury where both sisters lived gives their marriage date as 29 Sept 1832.
All the 11 trees give Latchington marriage for Mary Barnard and John Coolbear, 24 Sept 1832.
I think these must be the banns and not the marriage ? What do you think? Latchington is only a couple of miles away from Munton and could have been John's local church.  Or they could have married at both churches. I have this for one of my Scottish marriages but they were registered at the separate churches on the same day in that case.

Mary's parents are given as John Barnard 1780 and Ellen Reynolds1784 both born Tollesbury on these trees.

So at least we have a possible date to look for that baptism - 4 May 1806. Let's hope those pages are not missing!

Regards

Kathy

Hi Geoff,
received email yesterday and it is fine thank you. I am in Norfolk at the moment and internet connection poor. I have had to go 5miles to reply!!
I have c 1812 for Sarah so I guess I am just unlucky:((( Who knows why it was never recorded.
I see her sister Mary and she married the same day but I don't know what age she would be. I wonder if you are ever in the area again you could look up her baptism a few years  either side of Sarah??? We could maybe get the parents that way?
I think you are correct re Barnard , There definitely is no Y in the name.

Thank you so much for your help

Kathy

Thank you so much for looking Geoff, your efforts are much appreciated. It doesn't look as if I will be able to get back any further on this line without her baptism.  What a shame.
I have sent you a pm.
