Oxfordshire / marriage of John Lock(e) to Sarah? somewhere in Oxfordshire?
« on: Friday 12 February 16 18:33 GMT (UK)  »
From the Oxford FHS CD of Parish Register Transcripts (HED02) for the Headington area the first registered baptism of a child of this marriage (Anne Lock) that I have found is in Horspath  on 14th January 1798. That would imply a marriage some time in the mid 1790s.

A search of the marriage records for Horspath and its surrounding villages (Cuddesdon, Elsfield, Forest Hill, Garsington, Holton, Horton cum Studley, Marston, Wheatley and Wood Eaton) does not reveal a relevant marriage. So where else might this wedding have taken place?

Any suggestions as to where to look next would be most welcome.

Hi Rob

Yes the Barge Gordon in mentioned on the death certificate. I have a copy and will gladly send you a copy if you wish - just send me a PM with an email or street address.

AWT was the first husband of my grandmother Kate Hubbard.

I'm away from my records at the moment but from memory Kate and Arthur married in September 1897. Tragically AWT drowned very shortly afterwards but not before Kate had conceived Arthur William Tipper who was born in 1878.

I did manage to get hold of the newspaper article mentioned by Reyz and again I will provide you with a copy if you wish.  I have not tracked down an inquest although the death certificate and newspaper report between them provide a lot of detail about the incident.

Kate was subsequently re-married to Alfred Turner, a ships steward and the young AWT was brought up by Kate and Alfred in Greenwich along with their own family, the youngest of whom was my mother.

I have been in contact on Genes Reunited with another family with connections to AWT; if you are a member it would be worth searching for AWT on that site as well.

best wishes

Alan

Reyz

Thank you - it certainly looks as if the Gordon had a very unfortunate history.

I'd be most interested to find out how / where you managed to get a copy of the Inquest.

Thank you for taking an interest.

His name was Arthur William Tipper - captain of the sailing barge "Gordon". He was born in the Mile End area in 1873.

I have a relation who fell off a barge in 1897 whilst tacking in the Thames and drowned. This took place in the Ratcliff sub district of Stepney.

Are Coroners reports available anywhere?

I would think that possibly there may have been a newspaper report - any ideas where I might track them down.

I dont live in the London Area so access to on-line sources of information would be most helpful.

Occupation Interests / Ships Steward

My grandfather Alfred Turner (b Poplar 1874) is listed in Census returns (1901 and 1911) as a Ships Steward.

In 1911 he is living at 9 Union Wharf, River Side East, Greenwich. Apart from his birth and marriage details I know very little about him

Can anyone suggest where I might find out more information about his life as a Ships Steward?

Thank you for your reply.

I am also descended from Henry Rumsey (one of my g-g-grandfathers) through his daughter Elizabeth (b 10 Oct 1849 at 3 Cork St Camberwell).

Elizabeth married Zachariah Frederick Turner on 17 Sept 1869 in Poplar. As far as I know they only had one child Alfred Turner born 26 Feb 1874 at 30 Risterne Place, Poplar. Alfred is my grandfather.

On 12 Dec 1877 Elizabeth dies at Bethnal House which appears to be a sort of Asylum. The death cert records that she died of General Paralysis and appears to have been there since Feb 1876.

I am unsure about Henry Rumsey's dob. An IGI record for Elias Rumsey born Appleshaw and married to Mary Herold gives children as Elias b abt 1816 and Henry b abt 1818 but other sources would seem to imply 1823. Do you have any other information?

I now have an 1895 marriage certificate for JJS in which he gives his rank as "Conductor" - so by by 1895 he is out of the Army.

Being born in 1868, I guess that he would not have joined the Army much before about 1883, so it looks like his Army career lasted 12 years at the most

Having signed on what would be a typical period to sign on for?

Does service of less than 12 years suggest that he was discharged or invalided out?

Would the West Surreys have been posted abroad period 1883 -1895?

Hello JoRose and thank you for taking an interest

Thank you also for the link to the National Archives - I presume that such records are only viewable by personal visit to Kew.

JJS is married in 1895 in Poplar which is his birthplace and also that of his wife Elizabeth; I await a marriage cert from the GRO

Two children are born Elizabeth in 1897 in Limehouse and John S Styles in 1899 in Mile End.

Dont know when he was dischaged  so can't comment re the children. I guess that his marriage cert will tell me whether he was still in the army in 1895.
