Australia / High Street Maitland - Book
« on: Tuesday 09 October 18 21:05 BST (UK)  »
I am drawing close to the end of a 20 year research project on the businesses of West Maitland NSW.
I am able to locate many early families to businesses/addresses/residences etc.
I am also able to identify locations of many photographs within Maitland.

Feel free to ask questions and post photos for interest and identification.

Thanks, Peter F Smith

Do any of the Maitland photos show the town or buildings? I can probably identify them based on my research. thanks, Peter

Moss was in business opp Bank of NSW until 1870. So unless he still used old business cards this confirms an 1860s date. Moreover, until about 1866, his brother in law Jacob Audet ran this photo studio- so that probably narrows date to 1866-1870

Maitland Steam Laundry 1914 was at 198 High Street. - Still functions as a drycleaners at that address.

Previously near Long Bridge where it began around 1904

Do any of the photos show the town of West Maitland? If so, please post. I am writing a book on the subject. Here is a note on the photographer in question

Australia / Re: O'Donnell, William

Is anyone currently researching William O'Donnell of Wallis Plains/Maitland?
While records point to him being a convict arriving per Surprise 1794 - I am doubtful that is him?
Like to exchange information.
For one thing, settler John Brown wrote in 1824 of McDonald who lived close to Patrick Malony and Thomas Morgan (Molly Morgan's husband) at Wallis Plains. Brown wrote that Morgan was English, Malony was Irish and McDonald was Scottish. William O'Donnell's daughter married Tarvet a Scots man- so Im wondering if William O'Donnell was Scottish Catholic - 15% of Scots were Catholic as an estimate....
