Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Re: Romsey Extra

Something to note - one of the borders between the Extra and Infra is right smack in the middle of town, alongside the right side of the Boots building as you face it. In other words, don't assume if they were in Romsey Extra they were out in the countryside!

There used to be a stream next to this building (which has a long history going back to 1800-ish when it belonged to my husband's 4x great grand uncle) and a footbridge going over, hence as a parish boundary it made sense back then!

I have a Jane Sillence who married George Glasspool in Timsbury on 7 Mar 1869. I haven't investigated her parentage further though, from a quick look at age in 1871 census and comparing to 1861, her parents are probably Charles and Betsey. Charles was also born Timsbury approx 1810.

I have found these Test Valley folks moved around quite a bit -- most likely due to work.

George Glasspool is my husband's 1st cousin 3x removed.

It would be worth checking with the Lower Test Valley Archæological Study Group (LTVAS Group). I believe they maintain a large collection of old photos....

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Re: Death in Portsea 1837 ? Local Knowledge Needed.
« on: Thursday 22 February 07 16:50 GMT (UK)  »
The helpful lady at the Portsmouth Record Office told me that at the time they were closing Mile End cemetery, notices were printed in the newspapers letting families know that if they wanted to move their loved one's body, they could do so. It's pretty unlikely that many did, and so the bodies were dug up and moved to Kingston Cemetery and buried in mass graves. There are several plots with no stones in Kingston and at least two of these are the mass graves. The folks at Kingston (or the other cemetery) should know.

i have found that loads and loads of labouring-type workers were not included in directories.

Depending in time period, they might be in the electoral registers at that address? Also worth checking the census either side of the marriage -- a relative might be living at the same address -- a sister or something to the said fathers of the bride and groom.

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / 1901 Bristol Street Index lookup?
« on: Monday 23 October 06 16:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi - does anyone have a 1901 Bristol Street Index handy, or can anyone tell me what enumeration district Ash Road (Horfield) fell into?

I'm not having much luck figuring this out on Ancestry.co.uk 1901.  I want to search by street rather than by name.

Thanks
Lisa
