Thanks, I appreciate your trouble - the information is useful in itself.

Since I posted the request I have discovered that the Birkitts were Primitive Methodists.  If you knew them, you'd know why this is funny.

Would you happen to know where their burial ground is to be found?  It has to be in Brid since most of them lived in the Applegarth Lane area near the Bayle Gate.

Many thanks - Sue ;)

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / BIRKITT - Bridlington Burials
« on: Thursday 04 September 08 08:09 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone able to look up the location of burials for a family named Birkitt (and any variation) in Bridlington?
I suspect that when one is found, the rest will follow!  For this reason, I haven't stated a period of interest because any information will be gratefully received.
I suspect they may be in the Priory Cemetery.
If this is the case, how do I go about finding a particular grave - the cemetery is enormous.  Is there a sexton's record and, if so, is it available for reference?
I am not a member of any genealogical society in East Yorkshire but do have a FHS readers' card.
Kind regards...... ::)

Suffolk / LAPPAGES Of Polstead
« on: Thursday 08 May 08 20:15 BST (UK)  »
I am at present trying to trace the connection between the Suffolk and Essex Lappage families.
I have a John Lappage b. around 1711 in my tree who is described as 'of Stanway' (Essex) in his marriage record.  I have traced this at the Essex Records Office and he definitely has no birth record in the Stanway area at the correct time.  In fact, the very first mention of the Lappage name in the Stanway district appears to occur with this particular marriage record (November 23rd 1736 to Elizabeth Buntin).
I see that someone has posted the baptism of a John Lappage on January 6th 1711 in Polstead on IGI.  Because I recognise that this source is sometime suspect, I wonder if there is anyone who can confirm that the two Johns are, in fact, the same person. The IGI record gives his parents names as John and Ann but there is no further information.
There are only 12 miles between Stanway and Polstead but pinning down the connection between the two families is a nightmare!
Thanks for listening, Hope you can help!

Yes, he's brother of my 4x great grandfather, William.   I think his father was John b.1835-ish and his father, in turn, was also John born around 1711.  It is the generation prior to that which is, I believe, the key one.  This is where I think the family began to break up and go in different directions.

William and John had a sister Mary b.1859 who had quite an interesting son(!)  He was hung for persistent theft at Chelmsford in 1814 and his case was cited in a government select committee hearing on the abolition of capital punishment for theft.  His name was William Potter.

I have all his details if you would like to forward an email address.

Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: Family photographs - Lappage/marriage partners
« on: Saturday 11 August 07 08:11 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for the reply, Jenny.

Your research interested me a great deal.

My Lappages are from the area to the south of Colchester - mostly Copford, Birch, Layer Marney, Fordham - although there are a few who migrated to the Maldon area.

They seem to have arrived via Stanway which is now a suburb of Colchester.  As the crow flies, it is just 12 miles to Layham but it might as well be Australia!

I'm convinced of the link.  The marriage of the first John Lappage in my tree has his discribed as 'of Stanway' which means he lived there but wasn't necessarily born there.

I am going to the records office in Chelmsford next month so, hopefully, I can get this problem resolved.  I may also find the link between the Brightlingsea lot and the Colchester Lappages.

Kind regards - Sue

Sorry, I am unable to help.  A couple of Rebeccas but no Rachels, I'm afraid.

There is a branch of the family I am researching for which I have, as yet, found no link.  They do living in Colchester whereas almost all of mine come from the area to the south around Copford and Birch.  Only a few miles but a world away in genealogy terms!

There is, I believe, just one root family with lots of branches.  Sooner or later the link will become clear.  Currently, I am awaiting the results of enquiries from the Essex Registry Office on the parish registers of St Albrights church in Stanway.  I'm hoping this will clarify quite a few questions so stay in touch.

Kind regards - Sue

Northamptonshire Lookup Requests / Re: Swepson in the 1901 Census
« on: Thursday 06 July 06 16:36 BST (UK)  »
So  long since we spoke so I hope you are still interested.

I did figure out Jane's lineage to some extent.  Her father was Joseph b.1791 in Hampstead, London.  He married Sarah Elizabeth Carter in 1816 and had children Sarah Thomas and Jane.  There is also a son, Joseph, who probably belongs to them.

He later married Frances Rodway of Woodchester, Gloucester.

Joseph's father was Thomas b.1754 but I don't know where.

I also found Jane's son, William Lappage, after a four year search.  He lied about his age and ran away to sea in 1874.  Unfortunately, he didn't last long as he died in Bermuda in 1876.  I know where he is buried but no details as yet - I'm still trying to figure out how to get $36 to Bermuda for a copy of the certificate!

Can you see a link with your tree?

Kind regards - Sue
