Oh some important information I did not give. As the photo is a tin type it is reversed so the cap badge would be facing the opposite direction.

Thanks for the efforts!! I did try scanning the photo again but the cracking marks just changed from vertical to horizontal. ::) SO I tried taking a photo of the photo, I had to crop the image to get it below 500k.  I would post my attempt but it is too big to put on here. It is similar japeflakes but his is lighter and has better editing. Is it possible to layer different scans of the image to make  a better image?

I like the versions of the 2nd photo also, thanks for your time and effort on those.

Armed Forces / Some help with navy uniform recognition

Hi,

I am not sure what year or what unit this family member is, a sailors uniform but the cap appears to have some kind of badge, it is hard to make out due to the photo quality, it is a tintype. I was thinking Royal Naval Division due to the cap badge any ideas?

Hi,

Will it be possible to restore this tintype(so image may be in reverse) much? I have photoshop elements 9 I am not very good as of yet. I am also unsure of what is possible to restore on this photo. It is of family members, the navy uniform is not yet known, thinking maybe Royal Naval Division of WW1, but I cant verify the age of the photograph as my Grandmother does not know much about it accept its family. I will keep pestering her to get answers lol. Anyone think it is before the 1900s? the 2nd is of my Great Grandfather Smith who use to travel to Canada a lot, I think the person on the right of the first photo may be related as they have a resemblance, maybe his dad.

Well here is the photograph, any help welcome.
