Family History Beginners Board / Re: Insley family of Dersingham (Docking RD)
« on: Saturday 25 January 20 16:23 GMT (UK)  »
Alice Isabella Insley came as a small girl to Dersingham from London; her father was a policeman.  For many years she was headteacher at Snettisham and among her many interests was a love of music.  She would cycle to the Catholic Church in Hunstanton to play the organ there.  It was a fervent wish of Miss Insley that there should be a Catholic Church in her own village.  The lady took a keen - and successful interest in the Stock Exchange.  When she died in 1984 aged 93, she left a considerable sum to the Catholic Diocese for a church to be built in Dersingham - preferably in her garden.  If it was not used within a certain period, it was to be divided up amongst a variety of  Catholic charities.  The Diocese found the bequest something of an embarrassment.  It was thought there were not enough Catholics and certainly not enough priests but eventually, rather than lose the money, land was purchased (the site of the Dun Cow pub).  The church was named after the patron saint of music (St Cecilia) and the first Mass celebrated there in November 1990.  She is buried at Hunstanton.

Derbyshire / Re: Severnes of Derby

I have been interested to follow the 'thread' about the Severnes and Mary Ann Crocomb(e)/Crocorne.
I too am particularly interested in Thomas And Mary Ann and the Brixton Farm, Laugharne poisonings in 1850.  I had been trying to trace Mary Ann before marriage and so was interested to read the facts from other people's research.  By chance, I know what is now the Broadmarsh area of Nottingham - a rather run-down shopping centre with plans for redevelopment that coincided with the financial 'downturn' near to the Lacemarket area.
Around 1840 (close to Mary Ann's marriage) the pubs in the area seem to have been the Black's Head, the Blue Ball and the (Old) Royal Oak. Directories for 1840, 1841 and 1858 show these pubs but there is no sign of a John Crocorne/Crocomb.  If anyone finds out more, I would be very interested.

Thank you Mabel.  Name age and departure country seem fine and date would explain absence from UK census.  Trade something of a mystery but I guess you could declare yourself as Archbishop of Canterbury and if there was space on the paperwork it would be written down.  He was a farmer but immigration records in Freemantle have him as 'carter'.

Thanks heywood.  Not sure about Sally of Suffolk...  I have peered through parish records for links with earlier marriages/deaths or a wedding - but without success so far...

Thanks Pughy.

That's them alright but it's their backgrounds that remain something of a mystery.

Thanks for prompt reply.  I ruled him out - plus a coal miner of the same name elsewhere in Wales in 1891.  Henry did marry but not until he was 60....

Family History Beginners Board / John Barber & Susan(nah) Miller, Depwade
« on: Sunday 05 February 12 12:02 GMT (UK)  »
John Barber was born in Saxlingham circa 1804 and Susan/Susannah Miller in Moulton - possibly about 1809.  I am trying to trace a marriage record for this couple.  Susan may have been a widow or had a daughter Caroline before marriage.  John may have had sons George and Samuel with a first wife in Suffolk.  They definitely had a son Adam together in 1846.  Any help welcome!

Family History Beginners Board / Insley family of Dersingham (Docking RD)

Back in 2009 there was apparently some interest in this family.  I have been compiling some records in conjunction with the local (Hunstanton, Norfolk) Catholic church history.  This very definitely involves Miss Alice Insley, daughter of policeman James.  I can pass on details if there is someone interested.

]Henry Raymond[/color] circa 1891.  He was born in 1860 in Cringa, Kiffig to Benjamin & Keturah; he went to Australia in 1885 but returned to farm at Llansadurnen/Laugharne - date uncertain but probably after only a few years - but not found on UK census (until 1901 and 1911)
