Census and Resource Discussion / Re: Lies on the 1911 census?

Very interesting, thanks for that. Its may also explain why I cant see the baptisms of these children on the lancashire parish records site. I suppose if the children were illegitimate then they wouldnt be overly keen on a church service?! I will order the birth certificate just to confirm I think.

I've not got to order the birth certificate yet, suppose thats the next step, its just expensive at a £10 a time. I got John William Wood from his marriage certificate in 1922.

Yes thats the correct information for his birth.

Yes thats the correct marriage, however she already had 3 children named Kirkman. Surely not all illegitimate? So I assumed she was married previously but so far unable to find such a marriage or death of a possible husband.

This John William Wood was from Maplewell, Yorkshire and living there prior to them marrying.

Many thanks for that, its the Peake family I'm actually tracing, which is what shows on the scan of the docket. More informative than you realise, thank you.

Census and Resource Discussion / Lies on the 1911 census?

I was having trouble finding the father of Joseph Kirkman. Upon looking at his marriage certificate his father was named as John William Wood and I was rather confused. On one of the censuses all the childrens names were recorded as Wood even though their mother Sarah hadnt yet married Mr Wood. On the 1911 census they lie about how long they have been married, firstly writing the correct amount of time (ie 11 years) and then crossing it out and putting 18 years.

Anybody else come across such lies? Im still struggling to find who was Josephs real father.

Occupation Interests / Nail Maker - Atherton

Many of my ancestors either worked in coal mine or attached to a cotton mill. Interesting to see a slightly different occupation. Anybody come across a Nail Maker before?
