The Common Room / Re: Barbara Lambton Holland OBE

Lizzie, I don't suppose you have any idea about where the Lambton name came from do you? As far as I can see, it was first used for Barbara's grandfather, Richard Lambton Brown. But good to see it's still carried on.

All best wishes

I understand she is the only living relative; she's very grateful that she's been alerted to the appeal and will get in touch with CWGC as soon as she can.

Thank you so much for highlighting this - I don't often check into Rootschat these days but when I did today, your post was at the top of the list and I immediately recognised the name and got in touch with  my friend.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Re: James Flower / Flowers b Skelton Yorks 1854/55

Hello

Belatedly looking at this and I'm wondering whether you are confusing two Skeltons.

The James Flower who married in Guisborough probably lived at Skelton-in-Cleveland (part of the Guisborough registration district); the Flowers of Helperby may be connected to the Skelton just outside of York.

Oh to live in a village with a group of retired engineers! Lucky you!

It sounds like a fine and fitting reinterment and beautifully marked too. :)

Speaking as a churchwarden, if you are considering any sort of gardening/maintenance work in a churchyard, please make sure you consult with the church - vicar or churchwarden. They may have a deliberate re-wilding scheme or protecting a habitat/environment. There are also quite strict rules about what can and can't be done in a churchyard.

All too often, the cost of maintenance is beyond small parishes, and help with grass cutting etc would be very welcome. My church is very fortunate in that we receive help from the Parish Council but I know many that don't have that financial help.

Is it where his Mum came from do you think? You said she was born in Cardiganshire

I think there's a clue in the fact that you said he'd been a Reader; they're not ordained but it would have been a useful background for him.
You can read about Reader ministry here: https://www.churchofengland.org/life-events/vocations/exploring-lay-ministry

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Re: Middlesbrough newspapers
« on: Thursday 18 February 21 17:12 GMT (UK)  »
I've just found that the 'North Eastern Daily Gazette' is available on newpapers.com but only up to the early 1900s (which isn't very helpful - sorry) The Northern Echo is on FindMyPast but that's 1850 - 1949 so that's probably not much use either!

Someone else may know better - I hope so!!
