Thank you to both Jim 1 and japeflakes for your replies. It is much appreciated. So the photo has to be of my great aunt which I thought it was.

I would appreciate it, if this photo could be dated please. I believe the photo could be of my great aunt born 1893 in Victoria, Australia. Other family members think it is of my great grandmother born 1858 Victoria, Australia.

Kent / Captain John Basden of Baker's Cross, Cranbrook

My 9xgreat grandfather John Basden was referred to as Captain John Basden, clothyer on his son's baptism record in 1658 at Cranbrook. I hope someone is able to help me with why he was referred to as a captain and of what. Another descendant believes he may have been a captain in Cromwell's army.

Thank you

Thanks so much Tony. I assumed that would be the meaning of it as he changed his surname but kept his true surname as a second name when he deserted.

Armed Forces / Royal Navy Record Question
« on: Sunday 30 December 18 03:56 GMT (UK)  »
My grandfather's cousin joined the RN in the early 1890s. I have a copy of his service record - the last entry has that he served on HMS Goliath from 29th March 1900 to 24th February 1901. In the Character Column it has VG and in the last column - If Discharged, Whither and for what Cause it has 'Run'. Does that mean he jumped ship/deserted? If not what could it mean? I would be grateful for any help.

Thanks,

Leigh P

Nor I Wiggy. Although I do have a copy of a photo taken at my paternal grandparents' 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1956 of all their family. I have named everyone in the photo on the back.

Unfortunately Wiggy, we don't know who all those in the photo are - only about 12 are named which is such a pity as it would be wonderful to know who they all are.

Thank you Treetotal for your reply, I tend to agree with you but with the latest perhaps Australian summer of 1914-15. It is a lovely photo - my husband's grandmother's family. She is back row far right.
