The Common Room / Re: Wartime engine driver?
« on: Thursday 23 March 23 08:49 GMT (UK)  »
A great many miles of temporary railway line were laid behind our trenches to restock the troops. My wife's great grand uncle spent the whole of WWI driving an engine. He was a hatter by trade.

The Common Room / Re: Do you put media records on Ancestry?

I am sure we have discussed this before and the answer we came to was that copyright remained with the holder, but Ancestry was free to add it as a "hint" to anybody else's tree.

I am sure someone will be able to correct this.

My brother-in-law was taught to play the guitar by Ray Honeyball of Hedgehoppers Anonymous, and he is heard on the record "It's good news week". Both backing and some vocals.

I have been trying to upload a copy to Ancestry for a couple of years. When I queried them, they said that it was not a facility that they currently offer. I saw your post and had another look and there it was! I could now upload and I just have. Thank you.

To answer your question, I am all in favour.

Annotating the profile photo's definitely a good idea - I already add text to the profile images to identify anybody who died as a child, or anybody whose connection/details are not based on my own research.

But I can't think of a simple way to indicate on a profile photo that a person was married twice with no children after having had an illegitimate child with a different person. To me that's something that would be better indicated by (or on) the line joining the couple.

Maybe I am being very stupid, but what is the advantage, please? Ancestry allows me to make prodigious notes on any relationship. My cousin was very promiscuous, one of her one-day partners and the father of her 5th child was "Unknown rugby player, Clifton College First XI". How that would translate into an emoji, I don't know.

The Lighter Side / Re: WHAT IS THE POINT? by "Fed Up"

What is the point of posting a tree on-line if it is inaccurate and without sources ?

To my mind, knowing what is not a good lead, or path to follow, is just as valuable as knowing a correct one. It eliminates hours and days of work for no benefit.

For the longest time, I have said that spelling is an adventure rather than a science!

I have a twig that feeds into a minor branch of my tree.

A mariner, who was only known as Jack (as in jolly Jack Tar), married and produced 3 sons. When they were adults, the first called himself Jackson (the son of Jack), the second Jackston (Jack's town). The third son took himself off to Holland and was known as Jakobson (Son of Jacob)

Then there are the Whannells, who after 2 generations had morphed into Windmills!

There was a time when, if a gentleman owned a quality (expensive) hat, he would send it back once a year to have it re-blocked. A kind of annual servicing. Christies used to offer a lifetime re-blocking service for their hats.

ajm314159 is quite right, they are not duplicated, but rather appear twice for aesthetic reasons. If a person has 2 or more spouses, or a great number of children, Ancestry will duplicate the person so that part of the tree is readable.
Otherwise we would need to have 3D trees instead of 2D as they are now.

The Common Room / Re: ScotlandsPeople- Lost Credits

I am sure that I once (way before the pandemic) received an email telling me that I only had 5 days left before I lost my credits.  I could be misremembering this ...
