Copies of SAR Staff Magazine from 1906 to 1967 can be found on this website https://railways.haarhoff.co.za/ in which a lot of information about staff and their movements can be found.

Have you tried this site https://railways.haarhoff.co.za/ and entered Esperanza or your grandfather's name as a search term as it is a collection of old South African railway magazines.

Just as a matter of interest Harmanus should be Hermanus and Boedell should perhaps be Bredell which is in the Kempton Park area close to Johannesburg.

Hi,
The Wits University Archives which houses the Barnett Collection of photographs of old Johannesburg lists a photo of the Goodman Beart Building taken in 1906 in section 74 of the index. I do not know how to access this picture so you will need to contact them for more information at:  www.historicalpapers.wits.ac.za

Hi,

Try this website https://railways.haarhoff.co.za/ it has a selection of NGR and SAR staff magazines online covering most of 1905 to 1925. The NGR ceased to exist in 1910 and was incorporated into the SAR.

Duncan,

There is an area called Assagay near Hillcrest in Kwa-Zulu Natal between  Durban & Pietermaritzburg. This may be what you are looking for.

Meredith,
It is close to 30 years ago that I was last in this area but if you enter Jupiter, Germiston, South Africa into Google Earth it will show you how the vicinity looks today. It is now an industrial area but the large brown and yellow parts are the remains of the mine dumps and slimes dams from when the mines were still active. There appear to be no large relics viewable from the air so it is probably not worth a visit.
