The Common Room / O'Briens from Slieverue, Co Waterford, Ireland
« on: Monday 03 April 17 12:02 BST (UK)  »
I hope this is appropriate for this forum.  If not, please direct me to a forum that might be more suitable.

I am helping a friend to find her biological family. Based on the AncestryDNA results, and some other research, a possible candidate would have descended from Michael O'Brien (1872-1931) and Bridget Powers (1876-) from Slieverue, Co Waterford, Ireland.

What resources are available for us to narrow the search? We have been using mostly Ancestry for our search.  Are there websites with newspapers covering mid 1900's? Are there other resources we should explore?

Out of respect to living family members, I did not include too much detail in this post.  If you would like to share some additional info, please contact me through a private message.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Ancestry DNA Circles
« on: Monday 03 April 17 11:32 BST (UK)  »
I think I cracked the code on getting Ancestry DNA circles created.  This is from the Ancestry website:

A DNA Circle will form around an ancestor in your family tree if your tree is public and linked to your DNA test, and if two or more of your DNA matches...

    1. are DNA matches to you and to each other at a 2nd cousin level or further out
    2. have public family trees attached to their DNA tests; and
    3. share a common ancestor (according to their trees).

That means there must be 3 or more people that have the same common ancestor in their tree along with the DNA matches to that ancestor.  They must have at least three people with DNA profiles in their trees.  When I have been successful in getting DNA cousins to add the branch that contains me and my cousins to their tree, and I add those DNA cousins to my tree, a circle is created.  Once in a great while, Ancestry has created a circle when 2 people with DNA profiles are in the tree and the third branch is partially complete.  It is rare but it has happened.

By the way, even when the circles are created, it has been limited help.  It's a nice idea that I hope gets better.

I do have a public Ancestry tree. Here is a link to Catherine Quinn. http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/41077519/person/19575226378

Most of what I know about the Quinn's is based on oral history.  It has proven to be close but not very factual.  There was a sister, Mary Quinn, that married Garrett Murphy in the Philadelphia, PA area.  I do not know of any other siblings.

I would love to find out as much as possible about the Quinn's.  If you have a private tree, please use my Ancestry username and make me a guest to the private tree.  I would love to see what you have.

An update on the Mathew Fogarty / Catherine Quinn line.

Based on the information in this thread, we have been able to identify the line in the US and in Gortnaskehy, Tipperary, Ireland.  Mathew Fogarty (1803-1873) m. Mary Kennedy (1797-) were from the Gortnaskehy area. Mary Kennedy's line is documented in "From Bun Ciamalta Vale to New South Wales" by Roger Kennedy.

A more complete Fogarty lineage is on Ancestry.com but here is a list of the direct issue of Mathew Fogarty and Mary Kennedy:
Thomas (1825-1884) m. Catherine Kearney(1825-1902)
Mary (1826-1831)
Matthew (1828-1886) m. Catherine Quinn (1835-1907)
Omny "Emma" (1830-1877) m. John Hayes (1831-1909)
Mary (1832-1904) m. Jeremiah Carey (1839)-1908)
John(1834-1900) m. Mary Maher (1847-1926)
Edward "Thomas ?" (1836-1902) m. unknown
Jeremiah (1838- ) m. Mary Obrien (1847 - )
Catherine (1841-1909) m. Patrick Morrissey(1840-1899)
Rev. Michael Mark Fogarty (1843-1902) His probate papers from Saratoga County, NY provided a wealth of information
Margaret Fogarty (1846-1903) m. James Ryan (1845-1899)
Bridget Fogarty (1848 - ) m. Patrick Flynn (1849-1909)
Ellen "Sister Mary Augustine" (1851 - 1921)

I am happy to share any additional information.

That is fantastic news.  This is the first break in a long, long time. If you find anything else, please post it.

Tipperary / Richard Quinn (b: 1795?) & Mary O'Donell (b: 1795?)

I am trying to locate information on Catherine Quinn's family.  Here is what I have so far.

According to her US death certifcate, Catherine Quinn was born May 18, 1835.  Her parents were Richard Quinn and Mary O'Donnell.
Family verbal history says she was from Carrick-on-Suir, County Tipperary, Ireland.  She probably imagrated to the USA about 1855, plus or minus a couple of years.

Catherine immegrated to Pennsylvania, USA and married Matthew Fogarty on 22 Aug 1857 in Philadelphia. Again, according to family verbal history, Catherine had an older brother Patrick
that was exiled to Australia by Queen Victoria for his participation in an uprising.  This was before Catherine was born (1835).
Catherine also had a sister Mary that came to the US and married Garret Murphy.

Assuming the family history is based on facts but might not be 100% accurate, Patrick probably would have been born between 1814 and 1820.  Again assuming he was a teenager particpating in some sort of uprising.
That means Richard Quinn and Mary O'Donnell would be probably be married between 1813 and 1819, give or take a year or two.  That means they probably were born between 1793 to 1799, in or around Carrick-on-Suir, County Tipperary.

1.  What would have been the uprising that Patrick engaged in?
2.  Any information on Patrick in Australia would be welcome.
3.  Any information on Richard Quinn and Mary O'Donnell would be welcome.

Thank you for looking into this.  This is sparse information to begin with.

Death certificates have not been available.  I have been to the Montgomery County, PA archives and researched the vital statistics.  I have not been able to find anything on any of this family.  Most of the information is anecdotal family history pasted down through generations.  My next step is to review local newspapers for additional information.  As you know, that is very time consuming.

I will keep searching and post any additional findings.

Ireland / Re: Noble, Robert b:1790 & wife Betty b:1792
« on: Monday 23 July 12 11:48 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for the advice.  I will keep digging around.  I was hoping someone might know of this family.

I checked out RootsIreland.  Nothing that far back.  Only listings are in Griffith Valuation.  I checked out www.ulsterancestry.com  Lots of Noble families but nothing that confirms this family.

As far as Betty name, in various US census, she is later listed as both Eliza and Elizabeth.
