Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Soviet Passport
« on: Friday 05 January 24 12:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I would really appreciate any attempt at transcribing place of birth and place of residence in the attached extract of a Soviet passport from the 1920s. I have included other surviving bits of text, which may help.

My closest guess is the raion for place of birth is Poltava.

Thanks,

Ben

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Re: Marriage of Thomas Wayt of Swindon

Interesting - I think I agree that there are probably some siblings there.

I have started to trawl all the relevant wills (time permitting) to see if there is anything useful as I am at dead ends with the Wayt and collateral lines... While, so far, nothing that useful to the Wayts, it has shown some interesting links for other families I was looking at.

In case anyone you're interested in the detail - I have uploaded current progress to: http://www.skliar-ward.com/misc/Wills.htm.

It's rather time consuming so probably won't complete it any time soon.

Also - there's some nice evidence showing that the Bakers did marry into the Wayte family (outside the PRs) - see 1461/1750 and 1461/1736 on TNA catalogue, showing land being acquired by Mary, wife of Richard Baker, and then being in the possession of Thomas Wayt, brother of Richard Wayt.

Interesting to see someone else trying to piece together the Wayt family.

Is there any reason for you discounting Mary Hickes as Richard Baker's wife?

There is a 1655 marriage at Stratton St Margaret for Richard Baker and Mary Hickes. It seems to fit given we know Richard's wife was called Mary, and given that Richard's children were born around 1655 in Stratton Margaret (e.g. Mary, probable wife of Thomas Wayt, was born there in 1657). I have also not yet been able to find Mary Hickes's baptism or will. She is described as of "Rodbourne" in her marriage record. Presumably Rodbourne Cheney given there is a Katherine Hickes who marries at Rodbourne Cheney in 1661.

I am reasonably comfortable that Richard Baker was the son of another Richard Baker - there's a 1622 baptism record at Stratton St Margaret which seems to fit.

Thanks for the help. Finger's crossed they will soon be available online - Wiltshire Archives had been expecting them to appear on Ancestry mid-November:

Hi Sharon,

Thanks for the response. It still remains a bit of a brick-wall four years later!

Through tracing all the individuals in John Weake's will, I have weakly concluded that the Elizabeth Archard Hayes who married George White, is probably the daughter of John Archard and Catharine.

Primarily because the 1749 will mentions Elizabeth, Mary, John, Giles and Henry Archard and suggests they're of the same generation. Those names are the children of John and Catharine. There are baptisms for Elizabeth, Mary, John Giles and Henry in Crudwell from 1693 to 1706. Intriguingly the first baptisms make no mention of Archard - e.g. in 1693 Mary Hay is baptised to John and Catharine Hay.

I haven't found John and Catharine's marriage, however, circumstantial evidence suggests Catharine's surname is Weakes (it's the only way all the various references to John Weakes in the 1749 will and elsewhere can be reconciled without extremely distant kinship relationships).

Ben

Edit: And, for completeness - John who married Catharine is a son of John and Mary. Evidence for that being a baptism record, John Junior being referred to as John Junior and a grave inscription in Crudwell churchyard.

Ireland / John Cooper + Ann Logan marriage - c1854
« on: Saturday 18 April 15 13:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to find a marriage between John Cooper and Ann Logan. Unfortunately, can't seem to find anything anywhere! I have searched the UK and Irish indexes. I suspect they married c1854 based on their first child's date of birth. Possibly in Ireland, possibly in Lancashire. Their names are confirmed from their childrens' birth certificates.

--

What I know:
John Cooper was born c 1826 in Ireland.
Ann Logan was born c1830 in Co. Derry, Ireland.

They appear together in the 1861+ UK censuses, living at Consett in Durham.

They have numerous children including:
  • Mary Ann Cooper - 1855
  • Margaret Cooper - 1857
  • John Cooper - 1858
  • Isabella Cooper - 1861
  • Robert Cooper - 1863
  • Elizabeth Cooper - 1864
  • Edward Cooper - 1866
  • Rachel Cooper - 1869
  • Hugh Cooper - 1870
Based on where there children were born (according to censuses), they lived in the following places from 1855:
  • 1855 - Liverpool, Lancashire - Mary Ann Cooper
  • 1857 - Penlington, Lancashire - Margaret Cooper
  • 1858 - Rotherham, Yorkshire - John Cooper
  • 1861 - Consett, Durham

Any ideas?

Thanks JenB and judi2632.

JenB - I think I might have to get that. I always prefer to avoid ordering BMDs due to cost but I might need to give in here!

judi2632 - I had found that record, but I'm not confident they're the same John. Yes, they're born at the same time and place, but, there are two John Dixon's born at Long Horsley in 1834/35. It surprises me that this John might go from being a coal miner in 1851 to school master in 1861 and then back to coal miner in 1871! They would both be nephews of Margaret Jackson too.

Edit: JenB posted while I was typing this. I concur (though I have little evidence on whether such career changes did actually occur!).

Hi,

Any help locating a John Dixon in the 1861 census would be appreciated.
I cannot find his marriage record. The 1911 census suggests he was married in 1860, but his first child is born mid-1860s. If I can find him in the 1861 census then that should help with identifying the correct marriage record or even his partner's maiden name.

John Dixon was baptised in 1835, in Long Horsley. His parents were Robert Dixon and Mary Young (confirmed).

I have identified 1841, 1851, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 records.

Census records:

John Dixon was employed as a coal miner

1841: Born 1835; Northumberland. Living with parents; Robert Dixon and Mary Young. Residing in Long Horsley, Northumberland
1851: Born 1836; Long Horsley, Northumberland. Living with parents; Robert Dixon and Mary Young. Residing in Cowpen, Northumberland
1871: Born 1836; Long Horsley, Northumberland. Living with wife, Ann, and children John Walter Dixon (aged 5) and Margaret Ann Dixon (aged 2). Residing in Cowpen, Northumberland
1881: Born 1836; Long Horsley, Northumberland. Living with wife, Ann, and children John Walter Dixon, Margaret Ann Dixon, Mary Jane Dixon (aged 9) and Elizabeth Eleanor Dixon (aged 7). Residing in Whitley, Northumberland
1891: Born 1836; Long Horsley, Northumberland. Living with wife, Ann, and child John Walter Dixon. Residing in Cowpen, Northumberland
1901: Born 1836; Long Horsley, Northumberland. Living with wife, Ann, and child John Walter Dixon. Residing in Cowpen, Northumberland

1911: Born 1836; Long Horsley, Northumberland. Living with wife, Ann Dixon. Residing in Cowpen, Northumberland. Married for 51 years. Their 1911 return was incorrectly completed - they also provided the details for all their children and then crossed those out. They remain legible, however.

The 1911 confirms their children to be:
  • John Walter Dixon, age 43, married, dead, born at Tyne Docks, Co Durhamv
  • Margret Ann Dixon, age 35, married, dead, born at Tyne Docks, Co Durham
  • Mary Jane Dixon, age 39, married, born at Newsham, Northumberland
  • Elizabeth Eleanor Dixon, age 37, married, born at Burradon, Northumberland
  • Stephen Henderson Dixon, age 1, single, Born at Burradon, Northumberland
Either Mary Jane or Stephen Henderson was also dead at the time of the 1911 census (3 dead, 2 alive of children).

Thanks,

Ben
