Midlothian / Re: Census

There is a plaque on the wall in Waverley Station referring to the Physic Garden. The Physic Garden and Trinity College Church were two of the places that were cleared to make way for the Waverley Station (or its predecessors in the 1840s) when it was built in the 1860s.

Scotland / Re: 1841 census - what could this be: "Sp Dealer"?
« on: Saturday 08 October 22 21:08 BST (UK)  »
There is no indication in the instructions to the census enumerators that Spirit Dealers were likely to be male only. The wording on the instructions is "Add Sp. Deal. to the trade of all persons who are also engaged in vending Spirits."

In one of the other occupations, it is implied that the people are male - that is miners: "Always add the name of the Mineral in which each person is employed to the occupation in which he is engaged. If only general work add M., as "Coal M.," "Copper M.," "Iron M."". There is a distinct reference to "he".

Stirlingshire / Re: WAUGH family genealogy

Margaret Waugh (c1830-1873) who married Archibald Downs (1824-1868) in 1854 in Slamannan is in my family tree. Archibald Downs was a brother of my g-g-g-grandmother Helen Downs (1813-1864). They had 7 children that I know of. I have not followed the Waugh line any further back than Margaret. Other than her parents' names, the one other nugget of information on Margaret's death certificate is the informant, Robert Taylor, uncle. I don't know if that is any help to you (or if you already had that information).

Scotland / Re: Why Two Records of Birth?
« on: Saturday 22 May 21 08:39 BST (UK)  »
I have 12 births in my family tree from the 1860s to the 1930s where there are two birth certificates. They were where the birth took place in one district and the family home was in another district. The birth would be registered in the birth parish and that record transcribed into the 'home' district register. In the column with the registrar's signature it should have words to the effect of "transcribed from the register of ........ district". The transcribed one often has the registered date a day or two after the original birth certificate. The date of birth is unchanged between the two documents.

This often occurred in the first birth in a family and often where the mother would go to stay with her mother for the birth; and presumably learn from her experience in such matters. It was also before the days of most births taking place in a maternity hospital, when it usually took place at home.

Dr Beggs Buildings were  few hundred yards west of the west end of Lower London Road at Abbeyhill. See the map at the link here showing a comparison of old and current maps on the NLS website.

Midlothian / Re: Nicolson Street Edinburgh 1901
« on: Thursday 02 January 20 16:47 GMT (UK)  »
In modern terms, 51, 51a and 53 Nicolson Street form a tenement building. 51 and 53 are ground-floor shops. 51a is a tenement over the shops, with one house on each of three storeys. It is possible that 51a was originally 51 (same as the shop).

Lanarkshire / Re: Cadder baptism 1828, anyone heard of this place?

The NLS 'side-by-side' maps show how Gartgill grew and pretty much disappeared over the years by changing the old map from one era to another.

It looks like all that remains on the ground now to remember Gartgill by is a street called Gartgill Road. The houses and other buildings have all gone.

The Cruickshanks and some of the Orrs are in my family tree. I have not managed to link the other Orrs to my lot.

East Lothian (Haddingtonshire) / Re: Dunbar Cemeteries

Is there any background showing in your photograph? If so, please describe it; or if you can do, post a scan of the photo here.

If it is the cemetery at Dunbar Parish Church, depending on the angle the photo was taken from, you could have a large red sandstone church in the view, or the sea quite close. Some of this cemetery is on a gentle slope.

If it is Deer Park Cemetery, that looks to be almost flat, with trees up one side of it; farm fields on two sides, and the road to the remaining side. I doubt you can see the sea from much of the cemetery; or if you can see the sea, it is further away than at the cemetery in the town.
