Hi I recently managed to solve the riddle that I posed back then - The parents of Mary Dunne were Bartle Dunne of Portlaoise Parish and Mary Nolan of Fisherstown. Mary Nolan was a sister of Garret Nolan of Fisherstown. Another sister was Judith Nolan of Fisherstown married Tom Conlan of Ballykelly
Their Daughter Anne Conlan was mother of Julia Mara who in turn was Mother of Dan Luttrell

Hello I am looking for some help to solve a family tree puzzle. I have a Civil Birth record for Bartholemew Whelan born in 1879 to Patrick Whelan of Kilmurry and Mary Dunne in Maryborough parish (now Portlaoise). According to my late Grandfather Daniel Luttrell, born Courtwood in 1877 he was a second cousin of this Bartle Whelan. BUT HOW ? Obviously second cousins have Grandparents as siblings so one of Patrick Whelans or Mary Dunne (of Loughteeog I believe) parents had to be a sibling of one of Daniels grandparents. Daniels grandparents were John Luttrell of Courtwood and Bridge Cassidy of Fisherstown on his fathers side and Daniel O'Mara of Inchacooly and Anne Conlon of Ballykelly on the Mothers side. So can anyone help me find who the parents of Patrick Whelan and  Mary Dunne were?. I strongly suspect that the answer will be the mother of Mary Dunne. I have been in contact with descendants of Dunnes of Loughteeog but to no avail and I know that the information will more than likely come from Parish records. The 1901 census shows a head of family Patrick Dunne born 1831 in Loughteeog - could be older brother of Mary. Any ideas please ?

HI - I have gone back to my sources and it now seems that this is not a place in County Laois. It is from a US death cert which lists a grandmothers birth country as ARRAN. That may be Arran, the Island but may also be second hand information. Sorry for that  and thanks for the reply

Hi again - just to confirm that the last 2 posts by ShaneW147 are correct. Martin McEvoy married Ellen Fitzpatrick and their first born was Patrick and they lived in BorrisLittle  Patrick and three brothers emigrated to New Zealand. Later their parents Martin and Ellen also emigrated to NZ.    Ellen Fitzpatrick was my maternal grandfathers sister.

Hi - Don and Rita McLeod are descended from these McEvoys and they were over 2 years ago from NZ and made lots of progress with finding ancestors - If you are not already in contact with them then I can put you in contact as I am sure Rita will gladly share what she learned on her trip. Simon

Laois (Queens) / Re: Spencer & Brophy Families in Laois

Hi I am descended from the Brophys of Vicarstown and I believe that you are correct about them being Stonemasons and originally from Skerry Roseanallis Co. Laois. I do not know if your Brophy is from our line. My earliest confirmed Brophy is Mark whose first child was born in 1839. There was either a Sister or an Aunt called Margaret who married a Behan and had a son Mark in 1815. In the tithe applotment books of about 1827 theres a Bryan and a Mark Brophy in Moyanna/Vicarstown and we believe that this is the same Mark Brophy. We do not know how Bryan was related but assume he was a brother. However the name Bryan Brophy does not appear as a family name after that. Please contact me and we can explore this further. Simon
