Dear " Gardener" and indeed others on this thread.I have finally made my way back onto this site after quite a while...appologies for lack of response on my part.
The interesting book I had spoken about was written by Harry Hartill, and is called " children of the twenties". It was printed in 1995 by Chase Terrace High School, and it is a delight!
I do not remember the name Wollox but will have another look.

Just letting researchers interested in Cannock Chase area Staffs that there is a fantastic book  called " children in the twenties",written by Harry Hartill.I have a phoptocopied version of it that was sent to me by family some time ago,and they obtained it from a school in Cannock. He details families that lived in chase terrace, kids that attended Rugely road school,,chase town,East gate street, references to coal mining etc etc..the palace "picture theatre" near the uxbridge arms.
My Father ( now 84) was mentioned as living in one of the terraced houses along with his sisters and brother the "Arthrells".
Quote: The Victoria Hotel stood on the corner of the high street with a number of terraced houses occupied by the following families:
Mr & Mrs George Stanley,Hopleys,Walkers,Wilkinsons,Wilfox,Harveys,Arthrells,Beardsmores, beddows Websters and Dunns..

Poor Mary having to leave her children behind...what became of them I wonder?
It all goes to prove that we have no idea how hard life must have been. Some of the convicts were either so young or so old when they were is a wonder any of them survived the voyage.
