The Common Room / Re: A Mystery called Georgiana/ Georgianna or similar

Thank you Venelow
... for correcting the Coneysthorpe/Countesthorpe and Betsey's maiden name errors.  And also for sharing your research.  Such an interesting mystery - which seems to have been finally cleared up.

If Georgianna did not die until 1940, then Harry Seekings was a bigamist!

I hope at least she led a happier lift as a musician in the US.

Venelow, Canada.  Have you been able to find proof that Georgianna's mother was Betsey Howes?  I believe that THAT Georgianna, is not the lady who married Harry Seekings.  She is the mother of of 3 children and with husband Harry in Coneysthorpe in 1891 Census.

In 1890, the other Georgianna, daughter of Robert Prest and Betsey Howes arrived in the USA and three years later she married Thomas Smith.

Hello Michael,
Birthdate was given to me by her granddaughter who lives in Australia (I am in NZ) and I think you're right - they guessed at Newcastle for birthplace - because they knew Ethel and her daughter came to Australia from Newcastle.

Could the Cragg's something be Cragg's Castle - I can't think why they would be living there but family "think" Ethel was a housemaid at Cragg's Castle.  I can't find a Joneson Street in Eston today, nor a Cragg's Castle.
Regards
Sue

To Michael and Andrea,
Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.   I had found the 1881 census, but the information didn't seem to match the information I had been given by my husband's family.   However after revisiting the sites, I am sure you are right.  Family stories give Ethel Ann's father as a miner, and I am trying to find out more about him and his family.

Now I have a name for his wife also, Rebecca Jackson, I will search for more information on her also,

Ethel married George Routledge 17 July 1901, so this would be right that she was living with mother in March 1901 when the census was taken.   I have been advised of the following by a relative of my husband, who has a record of the marriage certificate:-

George is shown as batchelor with the profession of Amannensis (taker of notes ie clerk?) and she as spinster.

The officiating curate was E. Herbert M. Ainslie.  The witnesses were George Millington and Edith May Smith.

Their addresses were shown as

George:  90 Wharncliffe St, Newcastle-on-Tyne

Ethel Ann:  Craggs Castle, Eston (about 6 miles from Middlesborough and 5 miles as the crow flies from the coast of the North Sea coast, between North Yorkshire & Durham).  We believe Ethel Ann worked as a housemaid at Craggs Castle.

It now seems that Ethel had two older brothers, as well as a much younger brother - we didn't now about the two older ones.

I'm gradually piecing information together

Hi Jo,
Thanks for your help.   Doris was my grandmother, my mother her only child and she is now dead.  If Doris was a baby, and Henry and Elizabeth relatively young, it could be assumed that she is eldest child and Elsie was born later - it would be wonderful if I've found her!  I know Doris' birth day was 21 May, but I don't know what year ...
Regards

Hi Casalguidi,
I want to find out more about his ancestors (he was my grandfather).  I did mean Stone near Dartford so the site you have directed me to is great.  Will take me a while to sift thru.  I am in New Zealand, but I went to St Mary's Church 30 years ago - it's where my parents married.
Many thanks
Sue   ;D

Hi Joanne,  that was quick!   Perhaps this is her - she lived in Stone near Dartford but I don't know where she was born.  I DO know she had a sister named Elsie tho'.
Thank you for anything further you can add,
Sue
