Derbyshire / Re: Village name from 1851 census

Thanks Graham,
I hadn't noticed that but it's a very useful find.
Do you know of anyone who has compiled any of these Garlick family groups from Hadfield, Gamesley or Simondley?
I'd love to contact them and see what they know.
Thanks.
Chris.

Thanks everyone for your insight.
I can see 'Simondley' now, which I couldn't see before.
And I think the 1841 cross-reference proves it.
Appreciate all you help.
Regards,
Chris.

Derbyshire / Village name from 1851 census
« on: Monday 04 March 24 09:59 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping someone with excellent reading skills can read a village name in the 1851 census.
Here are the details:
HO107/2152/509 p 18
It is John Garlick, aged 61, living in Charlesworth, Derbyshire.
Ancestry have transcribed his birthplace as 'Sunwich', which I cannot find on a map.
Familysearch have transcribed it as 'Ludworth', which I know exists but to me it doesn't look like Ludworth.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Chris.

I also have relative who was buried in this graveyard, and suspect there are others of mine as well.
But like you I could not find any surviving burial registers.
Did you find anything since your last post?

London and Middlesex / Re: 1851 Help with daughter of Mary Turner
« on: Monday 28 February 22 05:34 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you everybody for your help.

I was thinking that despite at first glance the name looks like 'Dartha' that it may not be as the first letter clearly looks like the same 'A' we see in the two 'Ann's named above.

Looking at the letter structure it starts with a hook at the bottom, goes straight up then down again (to form the 'A'), then does a big outward curve and a loop at the top.
I have attached some images of the two 'A's and also some 'D's on the same page.

If we assume the name starts with an 'A', does anybody have any clues as to what it might really be?

Thanks for your help.

Chris.

London and Middlesex / 1851 Help with daughter of Mary Turner
« on: Thursday 24 February 22 12:28 GMT (UK)  »
I have a copy of a census image from Marylebone, St. Marys from 1851.
(HO107/1489).

The image is at HO107; Piece: 1489; Folio: 538; Page: 41

The last 2 people on the page are an ancestor of mine, Mary Turner, and her 9 year old daughter, born out of wedlock.
Mary is aged 39, she is a widow who was born in Longbridge Deverill, Wiltshire.

What I am having trouble with is who this daughter is.
Ancestry have transcribed it as 'Dortha' or 'Dartha', but I do not think this is correct.
The first letter to me looks like an 'A' based on the 2 Ann's recorded above (curve of the letters look the same).
She was born in St. Pancras c1841/1842 but I can't find anything on freebmd that could be her.
Any ideas?

A little info on Mary Turner nee Gray:
She was born c1810 in Longbridge Deverill, Wiltshire.
She married William Turner in 1829.
William died in Wiltshire in 1836 after having 2 boys.
Mary moved to London between 1841 & 1851.

But it is this extra daughter I am interested in.

Can anybody suggest what her real name is, or able to find her birth registration or entry in later census records?

Is it possible that her birth is registered under her real father’s name?
And if so how do we now find it?

Any help would be appreciated.

I cannot find Mary Turner after this 1851 entry either.
Perhaps if we find her we may find this elusive daughter.

Thanks so much.
Chris.

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Census Piece/Folio numbers
« on: Monday 01 November 21 13:06 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you everyone for your help.
I can now see what the numbers mean and understand it a bit better.
It should help me search for villages in the future.
It does seem though there's not one central database for the entire census, understandably, this would be a very large database.
Regards,
Chris.

Tipperary / Re: Where is Bolynamiclane?
« on: Monday 01 November 21 13:01 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you everyone for your help.
I can certainly find 'Clonamicklon' on the map, and I can find 'Foilacamin' which borders it to the south.
And the townland of Bolynamiclane sits between these two on the Tithe Applotment register.
So I think I can safely assume it sits roughly in this area, and has been swallowed up by some neighbouring townland.
I've learnt a bit today about Irish townlands, and it's always good to learn something new.
Kind Regards,
Chris.
