Take a breath Lizzie.  Have you worked out broadly which side he belongs to, paternal or maternal.
My 4 half first cousins match me at 572, 514, 496 and 483, all on ancestry.  Same grandmother, different grandfathers.  From experience I know that numbers on My Heritage are bigger than on Ancestry so half first cousin would be reasonable to me.
It is a pain that you can’t email my heritage matches.  I suggest to look carefully and see if you can build or extend a tree.  Mind you finding the male responsible is a hard job, especially as in my case there were 5 possible brothers living in the area at time of conception.

Added: don’t discount any on looks.  I look nothing like any of my half first cousins.

I was very excited to find a match of over 300cM on ancestry linked to my unknown biological grandfather.  Many attempts to work out the link were met with silence.  Eventually I dug around and started a tree for her having found out her parents.  Dug a bit more she had the same great grandparents as I, on one side, on the other they were her grandparents.  Toss that one out I can’t work out that.
Another good match I found on a different line had the same 4 X great grandparents as me.  Too large a match.  We compared out trees and found that three of our direct ancestors had siblings who had married into each others lines.  Small area and population.
Nothing is easy with this hobby!

The Lighter Side / Re: Myths debunked when doing family histroy.

My mother thought both sides of her family were from Wales.  Not really.  Some that stayed in England on one side moved to Wales after my great grandparents came out to Australia.
When you look at Ancestry’s interpretation of my DNA they include Keynsham, Somerset as part of Wales, hence I have a larger DNA sample attributed to Wales than is true.
Her other grandparents did come from Wales

Australia / Re: "The Somerset Years"

Spot on, thank you Bryan.  I didn’t know when the Joshua left England but have traced their movements after they landed through the births, and unfortunately many deaths of their 11 children.  I am descended from number 11, James Arthur James.  They were in Creswick in 1854 so now I need to work out if Alfred was one of the miners who marched from there to Eureka.  I’m patient, I will eventually get answers.
Alfred later became involved in setting up a school in Scarsdale.

Ooh, now you have me intrigued.  My great grandparents Alfred James and Elizabeth Heale married in Bath in September 1851 and came to Australia on the Joshua, landing in February 1852.  I wonder if they or the voyage of the Joshua is mentioned.

Oops, should have added they were from Keynsham, Somerset.

I have Heale/Hale from Somerset in my tree.

The Common Room / Re: Surname used as a middle name

I guess in one way our male line was lucky.  My great grandfathers surname was James, with my grandfather named James Arthur James.  The James has followed through many lines as a middle name.
Another great grandfather surname was Vincent and two times grandparents with surnames of Williams and Ellis.  Ellis has continued as a name.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Does this make sense?

I think Scotland is the problem.  ;D
I had 22% now down to 5%.  My son inherited 10 of the 5 from me.  Huh?  His Scottish ethnicity is twice from me than I have.
I have always argued about Ancestries interpretation of my Scottish ethnicity.  I can’t find any links so must come way back from my paternal grandfather where the line is said to have gone to Canada from Scotland.
Surely it can’t be from the fact that I married a Scot.  ??? ???

Kit I had free BNA in Australia.  Of course only scratched the surface, but have a try.
Australian libraries also have free access.  My local library has Ancestry, Find my past and BNA library editions.
