Yes, standard German naming pattern for that time ... sons given two forenames, the first after their father, the second the one by which they were commonly known.
A lot of movement of sugar refinery employees ... there were some 25 locations in England, and 8 in Scotland, where sugar was refined. The Liverpool refineries attracted many men from London and from Greenock, whilst the port attracted them from all over, especially Hull, with the hope of passage to America.
A number of sugarhouses in Liverpool, though Henry Tate's, in Love Lane, did not become Tate & Lyle until 1921.

kiwilou, welcome to Rootschat.

Interesting to see if those Priggens were related, and exactly where they came from in Germany ... Hanover is too large an area.
Note that I also have Jacob's probate summary on the website ... was it the Chapman family that you connect to, by any chance?

Behn- West Derby/ Germany

Does this point to sugar refining, I wonder?

I have basic details of John / John Frederick / Stanley, sugar workers / brokers, 1827 through to 1911, in Liverpool, on my database, and also much earlier references to Jurgen Behn 1721 and J J Behn 1799, both Hamburg.
Your Ludwig emigrating to Surinam from Hamburg may be connected, sugar being the main produce of Surinam since 1700, and Hamburg the centre of German sugar refining at the time.

The Common Room / Re: London Land Tax records

It would appear that the rate had been set at 4s. Each property was given a 'multiplier' depending upon its size and usage  ... that's the number to the left.
So, the ordinary dwellings had a multiplier of 3, therefore they paid 12s; your Joseph had a multiplier of 6, so he paid £1 4s.

£1 4s rate paid. Twice the amount paid for an ordinary dwelling in that area, as the number to the left signifies, so probably a somewhat larger house.

I don't use BNA, only FindMyPast. I have found hundreds of newspaper articles for people on my tree over the years. In some cases giving clues that break down brick walls. It's the main reason I continue my FindMyPast subscription.

Fully agree .... I use FindMyPast regularly for info for my website ... I would, however, advise that it takes some time to get used to the new search page; the choices are many, and quite often the more vague you can be the better.
