Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / A burial record from Barnet London
« on: Tuesday 24 November 20 14:22 GMT (UK)  »
I need a little help in understanding a burial record from 26 January 1939 in Barnet, London. I am only interested in entry 47132 but I have scanned the previous one as well just give some more context.

1. Do the two lines

****    *****  Mills    14/7/49
Head ?erbs on Ldy ?Mills?  27/3/39

belong to 47132 or to entry 47131.

What might these lines mean?

2. Register number
I read this column as: 47132   in      do   H5   (M)
What do the words "in" and "do" mean and to what might "(M)" refer?

3. Name, &c.
I need help with the lines between Redhill and Ronald which I read as:

**** - **** -
?Willy?     Hendon
7H H5 11W. 44882. 11W4N 45984   1/4

To what do the numbers refer?

4. Interments
Does this column relate to other people who were buried in the same grave, with the date of that burial being 23-10-42.

5. Items
Can someone help with the missing entries in this column which I read as:
Ground,  Digging, Fee, ****, ****, ****, Mats

Thanks

Lines 21 and 23 - could "tunnel" be "tunvril" - I have no idea what this might be, but I saw it in another inventory, located "in the chamber over the hall".

Line 16 - I presume that Sope = Soap

Line 26 - what is a Jutt/Intt

Line 42 - what is a Cold still

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: A late 1719 Sussex inventory

Many thanks, Horseley for that final push - the exception has been noted and is very much appreciated.

I see there are some 20 definitions of “crook” in the English Dialect Dictionary but the third one seems the most relevant with: "an iron hook and chain suspended in a kitchen chimney, on which the cooking vessels are hung over the fire". We live and learn! By the way, I presume that Ligg'd can be read as Legged.

Thanks for correcting that mistake, Horseley.  Eagle eyes as ever.

I should imagine that discovery prompted you to re-read the whole transcription again; so would it now be safe to say "case closed"?  ;)

Thanks Horsely for that final, very satisfactory, explanation.

Case closed.
