Suffolk / Stows in Suffolk
« on: Wednesday 27 December 17 21:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to find the parents of James Stow who was born in 1806 and died in 1887 - he was a school master in Polsted Suffolk. He married Ann Bugg in 1824.

Any hard evidence of parents’ names would be epic!

Thanks

I am now looking for James Stow's parents.  I have that he was born around 1805 in Glemsford, Suffolk but I cannot find any record of his birth or baptism.  Please help x

Hi
I have traced my mothers maiden name, Free, back to Gilbert Free born around 1606 in all saints, fornham suffolk. He married a Margaret nunn. I think his father was a john free but I'm stuck here. Can anyone shed any light on their past? How would I go about looking even further back?

Suffolk Lookup Requests / Stows in Polstead Suffolk

Hi

I am looking into my family history.  I have so far gone back to James Stow (born c.1806) who married an Anne Bugg in Polstead Suffolk.  I think James' parents were Abraham Stow (1772) and Sarah (?) and I think Abraham's parents were Francis Stow (1745) and Mary Alderton (1745).

I am a total novice at this but I think that I have this right.  I am now lost and have no idea how to go back further - I have run out of census and cannot find parent's names on birth/christenings.

I would really appreciate some help.

Thanks in advance Laura

Hi

I am also looking for a Francis Stow who was married a Mary Alderton, they were both born around 1745 and lived in the Suffolk area (the family seem to come from around Hadleigh/Polstead area).  Any help/advice would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Thank you all for your help. Where are you looking to find this information? I am a total newbie to all this an have been relying on findmypast.co.uk - are there other websites which allow me to search for people? I am now looking back to the 1700s for several branches, are there censuses that go that far back or do I now need to rely on other forms of data?

You are amazing!  Thank you so much.  I can see that James Stow married Ann in Polstead in 1824 (when he was 18) - I don't suppose you know her maiden name or who his parents were?  I am using findmypast.co.uk to locate people but am only doing the free 14 day trial and I don't get access to parish marriage records.  I was wondering whether his parents' names were on it.

Thank you so so much for your help so far.

I am trying to trace back my family history and have come up against an ancient brick wall.  Instead of working my way up the tree I am working down to try and find someone who seems to have evaporated! I am looking for an Arthur Murrells Stow (born c. 1849) who I can find birth details for but then doesn't appear in any of the census until the 1881 census where he is head of a family in Ipswich.  I trawled through all the census and now have piles of 1851 print outs of Stows that all seem to have come from around Hadleigh.  The only other Suffolk Stows in this census are in Sudbury.  I am guessing that Arthur was somehow connected to these Hadleigh Stows but I now lost under a mountain of Josephs, Harriets, Hannahs and Samuels.  Any help would be very much appreciated.  If you have found my allusive Arthur Murrells Stow I would be very appreciative. :)
